Not bad at all for your first try. If I might make a recommendation for overall improvement, I'd suggest you start drawing skeletons of your characters before adding the details. I don't mean actual bones, mind you -- rather, basic shapes and lines that help you form the character's pose and proportions before you get too far in. How-to-draw books don't just make you draw a bunch of circles for no reason ;3 I used to draw free-hand, with no guidelines set up or anything, and I got kinda good at that, up to a point, but eventually I couldn't find a way to improve without breaking down and starting with skeletons. It takes a fair bit longer to finish a drawing that way, but it works wonders. I haven't drawn without skeletons in months, and I'm glad for it :D
