They are tricky. My fev refs are bird books. Or you can google it, like this one: [link]
I used to own a bunch of parakeets... feathery little fuckers. unfortunately, in reality, birds feathers are infuriatingly complicated, and I always attempt to put too much detail, ruining the image. it's always hard to tell what level of detail to add before it just becomes "too much"
