Jae had to consider herself lucky. If her ears hadn’t fit inside of her beanie as she had forced them to, she knew damn well that she’d be shivering a lot more. Granted, it was uncomfortable, but it saved her from having to deal with even more frozen appendages during her walk back to the city. Despite the cold, it was hard not to smile, for every time she looked up the stars were shining back at her, distracting her from the bitter cold that seemed so determined to break through her winter clothes. The stars, though... they would keep distracting her for the last couple miles of her walk.
The country road she had taken to wasn’t paved, nor was it bustling, nor were there any tire tracks at all. How such a road came about was still a mystery to the strange little hybrid, but she wasn’t about to complain. For a couple years now she had taken to using the trail through the hilly farm fields as a normal walking route. Should she need to clear her mind, calm down or just get a bit of exercise she would be down the road within the next couple of minutes. This night was no different, something had annoyed her during the day and it just sat there in her mind, rolling about in each new puddle of aggravating thoughts that seemed to continue to pop up. So off she went on a walk that had lasted a lot longer than she had thought it would...
It was only supposed to be an hour walk or so, and yet now she found herself in the dead of the night, staring up at the stars with that goofy grin spread across her lips as she walked. It had been close to four hours now, her knowledge of where the trail lead increased by a good few miles. Each step she took brought her closer home, though, the lights of the city that was still a couple miles away lighting up the sky down the trail, giving the snow that had fallen a wonderful sheen that was coupled with the twinkling stars.
It was really hard for her not to smile.
The racoolf continued down the same path, her short tail swaying with each step she took, her smile only getting wider and wider as the sky continued to darken as the minutes passed, only bringing out the stars’ shine more and more. With her eyes trained on the sky, not worried about running into anyone given the hour of the night and just where she was, she wasn’t expecting to hear a soft cough from her left.
The hybrid visibly jumped, her fur bristling, causing her winter clothing to become a tad uncomfortable. She turned quickly, her beanie becoming an odd shape as her ears tried to perk. The girl would be lying if she said that what she saw didn’t surprise and confuse her. It was a cat sitting on a fence post, staring up at the sky. She seemed cold, her jacket not very thick and the only head warmth the hoodie that had ear holes cut into the top. The thing didn’t even have a scarf. Jae, with a quirked brow and a cocked head cleared her throat, trying to get the attention of the feline.
With a jolt, the other girl looked down from the stars hazle eyes wide for only a moment before they softened again. “Sup?”
The question was simple - far too simple - especially for Jae to process right away. Instead she just continued to stare at the cat for a few more moments before cutting her eyes into a soft analyzing glare, still remaining silent.
The feline cocked her head to the side, her ears giving a slight twitch. “Uh... why’re ya looking at me like that?”
“Trying to decide whether or not you’re actually there, or I’ve just been out in the cold for far too long.” Jae continued to peer at the feline.
“Nope. I’m here.”
Rolling her shoulders, Jae softened her gaze, taking a deep breath as she continued to try and figure out just why someone was out in this cold with so little warm winter clothing. “What are you doing out here?”
“What are you doing out here?”
The retort wasn’t something that Jae had expected and so it caught her off guard, her ears twitching slightly from within her beanie as her muzzle scrunching up slightly as she bit the inside of her cheek in thought. “Taking a walk.”
“Well then so was I.”
It was hard for the annoyance not to set in. These kind of responses weren’t something that the hybrid was used to at all. “I’ve never seen you walking this trail before...” It was true, with how often Jae took to this trail she would know if she had seen that tuft of red hair and dark green hoodie before.
The feline gave a soft chuckle, her shoulders lifting in a shrug. “I wouldn’t doubt it, I’ve never been here before.”
“You mean you don’t live in the city?” Jae pointed toward the aura of lights that sat nestled between two of the hills in the distance. As the feline shook her head Jae couldn’t stop the worried gleam that came to her steely blue eyes. She gave the feline a second look around, taking in her clothing, her posture, anything that she may have with her, which was... nothing. “The next town is... miles away. You don’t even have a bag... How did you get here.”
“I told you. I walked.”
The simplicity of the answers she was getting normally would have annoyed the hybrid. But instead, after noticing what she had about the feline, it did nothing else but worry her more. “You...” She started out, her voice had fallen soft, barely coming through and into the cold night air. She seemed to fight for her words, her eyes trained on the feline as she pondered the situation over and over in her head. “Do you have anywhere to go? It’s just going to get colder and not many people walk this trail. I doubt anyone else will come by and help you if you start to freeze.” Well that was freaking morbid... The afterthought kicked the hybrid in the head a few times before she fought the urge to smack her palm against her face. Tonight was not her night for words.
It was only after a whole minutes of silence had passed that Jae had realized the feline didn’t answer and instead had taken to looking down at the snow that gathered at the edges of the dirt road. It didn’t take a genius for Jae to realize why the feline had remained silent. Though, instead of letting the silence linger and allow the feline to sit in whatever thoughts that may have been going through her head, she took a step forward, a smile dancing across her muzzle. “Want to come with me to the city? You said you’ve never been. I bet the Denny’s down the street from my place will be a lot warmer than that fence post, anyways.”
The feline looked up, a tentative smile fighting its way to her lips. “You... You sure?”
Jae chuckled and shrugged before taking another step forward and holding out her gloved paw. “I’m sure. I tend to take in strays now and again.” The smile remained on her face even as the feline stared at her paw in silence. Jae moved her paw a bit in a beckoning gesture and only smiled more. “Come on.I promise I won’t kill you and make your flesh into lamp shades.”
With her muzzle slightly open, as if almost surprised, the feline reached out and grabbed the hybrid’s paw, using it as support to hop down the fence post. “Uhm... Thanks.”
Jae shrugged and laughed. “No worries. The Denny’s is open all night, plus... Baconolia is going on right now and you look a gal who likes bacon- ack!” The girl didn’t have time to finish before she felt her paw get grabbed and her body pulled forward towards the city. Once her mind caught back up with her body she realized that the feline was pulling her along down the road at a faster-than-jogging pace. “What’s the rush?” Jae said with a soft chuckle.
The feline looked back with a wide grin and laughed. “I love bacon!”
Re-posting this because I saw some issues with a couple of lines I wanted to fix. But, right after I took it down I remembered that I could have just changed the file -.- Hur durp.
Anyways, this scene has been floating around my mind for, quite literally, years. I finally decided to actually sit down and take the time get it out. Originally, I had wanted to commission this piece from somebody else, but... I figured it'd mean more if I were to do it myself.
This took me a few days to complete, and I am... more than proud of it. I still have a long way to go when it comes to backgrounds, however. Heh.
Thanks again to
for giving the red lines that helped me get get this done. :3 <3
