D'awww how cute. An old pony drawn in the style of the new ponies. G1
was a little bit before my time. I grew up more around G2, who didn't
have a show that I recall. Did have a computer game, though! I went
back and watched some of the G1 pony episodes in 2009 and... the
80s must've been an odd time for cartoons. Haha. Anywho. I'm curious,
what did you mean Firefly is no longer copyright to Hasbro?

If memory serves, G2 did have a series: "My Little Pony Tales". I don't recall much about it, other than it followed a handful of earth ponies that lived in a town and spent a lot of time in school and an ice cream shop.
Laura Faust's original designs for the G4 series all used ponies from the G1 series: Twilight, Surprise, Posey, Firefly, Applejack, and Sparkler. However, as she's stated online, "Except for Applejack and Spike, Hasbro lost all the copyright and trademark rights to all the names from characters in the 80s, so I couldn't bring back anyone but those two." Since Hasbro did hold the copyrights to the G3 names and designs, those were blended with Faust's originals, and Twilight became Twilight Sparkle; Surprise became Pinkie Pie; Posey became Fluttershy; Firefly became Rainbow Dash; and Sparkler became Rarity.
I'm not sure who Hasbro lost the G1 copyrights TO. I suspect they might have gotten hopelessly tangled up with the G1 series' animation company (which appears to have changed names/ownership several times since the 80s...and have contracted vhs/dvd sales through even more 3rd parties).
tldr: Hasbro told the G4 designer they'd lost most of the G1 copyrights. Lawyers are probably to blame.

That is quite interesting information! I did not know that! I could see the resemblance in some of them. Rainbow Dash definitely reminds me a lot of Firefly, although there was also another version of her in G3 that was not quite so much like Firefly... she was an entirely different character, if you ask me. The base color and rainbow hair might be the same, but she's so different personality wise, and the cutiemark reminds me more of Firefly. Anywho. That's a shame they lost the copyrights to the old characters! On the subject of Fluttershy, though, I swear I had a G2 that looked exactly like her! Exactly. Even the cutiemark is about the same. The only difference is that she was an Earth pony. Sky Skimmer, I believe was her name. Here's a picture: http://mylittlewiki.org/w/images/5/.....ky_Skimmer.jpg I think Fluttershy is some kind of combination of Sky Skimmer and Posey's traits. (Cough they had a baby together cough. Just kidding.)
I miss the original My Little Pony show! I used to watch it all the time on the Disney channel ^^ I also watched My Little Pony Tails, but that sadly only lasted one season. After that, MLP pretty much vanished off the face of the earth until they started making new figures in 2004ish (i believe). So is Friendship is magic G4??
She also was originally meant to BE in Faust's G4, but like many G1 ponies, Hasbro lost the copyright, so they gave the pony the personality of Firefly and the name and colors of Rainbow Dash.
That lots of fanfics basically put Firefly in as Rainbow Dash's flight-camp instructor is no coincidence.

Firefly FTW!!! LOL I've actually toyed with the idea of gettin a tattoo of the original Firefly someday--she was such a symbol of my childhood. ^_^ another idea was to get twin blue lightning bolts on each hip....but I quickly dismissed that idea LOL (plus I didn't wanna get a bow tattooed above my tailbone like my best friend said in teasing ;)
