When you're waiting too long in the Purgatory and you're still not sure if you will go deeper or straight to Heaven, surely you will welcome someone who can give you at least a hint about it.
And that is Zacharian's job.
He is stuck in Purgatory since late 15th century, he can't tell if it's in purpose, or he is doing his job so well that they keep him in there.
He can see into souls and guess the future. Of course it's not for free. A coin or shiney trinket will do. Or a bottle of alcohol brought from deeper parts of Purgatory. What a little bastard...
