Did I already post this one here? I can't remember, and can't be arsed to search my gallery.

"You two have to live in fear and dread that you'll show up at the Pearly Gates with your ribbed leathers on knowing that I'm down here with your liver. And I won't do anything useful with it, because I'm going to make it into a hat."

Don't get me wrong, I love bikes and miss riding one greatly. I don't miss the morons in cars who either 'don't see you' even when you are wearing a hi-vis,have your light on and are riding an 1100cc monster.
I've been knocked off my ride 4 times - 2 of those ending up with a broken leg.
None of the hits were my fault -other than 'not being seen' - cars tend to bring out a mean streak in people I think.
The Disney classic cartoon with Goofy as 'Mr Walker' who turns into the Hyde-like 'Mr Wheeler' when he gets into a car illustrates it perfectly.

At least two friends of friends are dead because of this.
See, drivers can see a car. Motorcycles, though, their brains literally not only expect, but filter out. Once the car turned directly into her, and told the cops he literally didn't see her...even though she was wearing red in the middle of Ravenswood.

If I didn't live in the Great Lakes region or love to sleep / fuck in a car and not really drive it far enough to go through gas, you're NOT convincing me to toss the Volvo.
But this raises MANY good points. (One advantage of America is that places still have parking space.)

Dearborn? Sweet, my dad's from there. (Only downside is his astonishment at my lack of shit-giving about Bob Seger.) Yeah, it's more local stigma than anything else, I thought, the Ford driving. (He still insists on the brand, even though he's had to endure the shitty heating systems and vomit scented upholstery for years... IDK.)
I theorize that when you say 'dearborn' in a Chicago accent, the second syllable is a vowel sound previously unknown to modern science. A glottal norwegian slash O thing with a dash of cow thrown in. Your thoughts?

Wayne's a beautiful place in the spring. (Wheras we get thunderstorms.)
Chi Town is the place that, had you grown up there, every other place in the world is inferior, and had you visited, you'd say it's either boring or insane. ^^
Just searching for your happy place some ways, eh?
Bob Seger, '70s rock singer from Dearborn. ^^ If you didn't grow up there, you have no business knowing him.

Bikes can be ridden year-round if you got the balls for it. In the past 5 years alone, I've ridden in temps ranging from 9 degrees Fahrenheit (standing temp) to 112 degrees Fahrenheit. I've been on the road during severe storms, high winds, snow/sleet and pouring rain. I've ridden my bikes over 30+ foot-long patches of ice on the roadway.
I've also gone over the handlebars, blew through someone's mailbox, went down on a slick patch of wet leaves, had a bike spin out sideways while accelerating onto an on-ramp. I've busted an ankle, carved up my arms and legs, bounced my head (with a full-face helmet on it) off a curb at 35 mph, had keys in my pockets embed themselves into my thigh, and killed 2 birds and 3 bats while riding.
And I do all that with one functioning eye and someone else's kidney and pancreas. It's easy to wimp out and ride a car. But I gotta tell you, man...I laugh every time I pay my insurance and fill up at the gas station. And nothing beats traveling 600 miles and using less than 10 gallons of gas.
Then again, I could just be insane.

What about the ability to carry lots of luggage, or more than one passenger, or protection from the weather not only in winter (gotta love aircon) or the ability to have conversations, no need for protective gear thanks to inbuilt crash protection etc. etc. You can even sleep in a car if you're too tired to go on. x) And with mine getting over 60mpg on average (diesel), fuel economy isn't such an issue either. ;)
Whether it's more fun to ride a bike can be debated, but from a pratical standpoint, I think there's a reason for most people to prefer boring olde cars.

Id love to get the bike I designed 20 years ago printed up.. massive low pressure hot air engine means you dont need fuel in summer, and in winter the colder it gets the greater teh effiiency from the fuel you do burn. 8) Course, its got fuill body, decent seats, car comforts. But.. only 2-3 wheels depending if you need cargo space. 8)
I've been riding the last few years, and I love it. The idiots and dingbats on the roads can make it exciting at times (and there are two vehicles locally that have a size 10 bootprint right in the center of the driver's door). I get ~52mpg out of my 650cc scooter (Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive). Which is a lot better than the 17mpg I get out of my diesel truck.
I have ridden at temps as cold as -10F and as hot as 110F, in snowstorms, hail and the rain that accompanies tornadoes. Overall, I feel that it's worth the effort. Of course, I also believe in ATGATT, which is All The Gear All The Time. Helmet, boots, gloves and kevlar riding suit from Motoport. If there's better protection available, I haven't found it. And it works, the two times I've gone down, no injuries other than my pride, both of which were while cornering through standing water, less than an inch deep, at speeds below 25mph. One was grease, the other was leaves, both under the water and not visible. Those are my fault, although it's sometimes hard to admit.
