The Jaunt Chapter Two
Chris landed outside, he cushioned his fall with his hands and started to walk towards the highway. His parent’s house was located right off the highway, only about half a mile off in fact. He trudged down the dirt road path and started to think just how insane he really was. His plan was to take the highway down to the nearby town and hitch a ride to New York and continue down to the south. It was already October and Chris was only wearing a trenchcoat, a pair of jeans, and a plain white t-shirt, and that won’t stop snow. So he wanted to get to the south where it was going to be warm for the remainder of his journey.
Because he was cold blooded a few minutes if not seconds with snow weather could easily kill him, he didn’t want to risk that. In fact the ability to travel during the winter is what gave the mammals the edge during the territory wars. Pushing those thoughts out of his mind he pressed on, trying to get to the highway as fast as possible. Another big reason for going down to the south was that’s where most of his family was. For some reason his parents treated his relatives like the plague: unwanted and could kill at the slightest wiff. Before Chris left he made sure to pack a family photo album, on the back fo each picture was the address of the person, he couldn’t wait to meet his extended family.
Chris reached the end of the road, the dirt turned into pavement, the trees broke, and the crowning achievement of the Fifties was spread out in front of him: The interstate. He started walking to the nearby town of Himon, it was a good five miles away so he started walking a little faster, keeping his thumb out the whole time, hoping to snag a ride. He looked down both ways and was surprised to not find a single car, usually there were at least two or three cars traveling down, even for the remote area of Maine, but it seemed like the world wanted him to walk. Chris was fine with this, he had spent the last few months training his body to become a tool of long distance travel, Chris found as long as he found a cool place to rest and a warm place to run he can run almost forever. Even though those damn mammals take almost three times as much food as a reptile the ability to move at all times was what gave the mammals the upper hand in the wars in years past but no mammal could beat a reptile when it came to distance. A car zoomed past him, breaking his thoughts, he cried out for them to pull over but it was already long gone, discouraged Chris moved on. He stopped and looked at one of his favorite signs ever: Highway 69.
Chris chuckled and continued to walk towards Beldam, his guess was that he was about four miles away from the edge for Beldam, which sucked. He wanted to be there within the hour but he couldn’t run yet, not while it was still dark, he couldn’t see that well in the dark and if he tripped over something…well he didn’t want to risk damaging his knee. He looked behind him and saw a police car, an evil grin crept to his face as he found a way to get to not just through the first town, but the next one as well. He ran into the street and tried to flag the cops down, he started to well up his eyes with tears, a skill he found was very helpful, and hoped his acting skills were up to spec.
