best bet for getting better at proportions is to draw a lot of gestures,and focus more on getting proportions right from different angles and such than any other detail, basically you need to beat it into yourself step at a time

Kind of.Culturally most societies are male dominated/centric so reffering to a living creature with no gender as male is giving it the benefit of the doubt, as fucked up as that is.
Also while the concept of something or someone being genderless is gaining acceptance,The concept of it is still something very alien to the lions share of humanity,so pronouns like xem exist, they are not common knowledge.
there is a difference between agendered,trandgendered,intergendered and intersex though. and the best bet if you are not sure. is to refer to them in a neutral context until you can find out what their preferred pronouns are, and ask what they prefer
