Yup, I broke down and bought a Nissan Skyline...
It's a great looking car. It's not the sporty, 2 door one. But it's nice. The interior is amazing! Because my older car was on it's last leg, I needed something newer. My friend was getting rid of his Skyline, so I got it. He wanted something with a stickshift.
This car is automatic but it has the slapstick whatchamahazit that makes it think it's a standard. It's pretty awesome, I used that more often than not.
So far, I love this car. Just wish they weren't illegal in the states!

Might be able to get it in. Since the Skyline R33/34 coupe has been approved for import, if it shares certain similarities with the firewall you might be able to get it classified as "reasonably similar" to a car already approved for import.
But yeah, you're right that it would require some modification, usually with DOT-approved safety glass (even if the glass in it meets DOT standards) and strengthened bumpers (even if it meets or exceeds crash test standards). For some, it's worth it, for others it's too much hassle.
