So a few months ago I fixed my xbox in a very similar manner (I set up mine with it's own power supply to give the fan a lot more output) to fix my Red Ring of Death problem and a friend of mine wanted his fixed but wasn't willing to pay for the power supply and other stuff to make the fan work at it's best ability so for $50 I rigged the fan into the console's power supply, replaced the RAM heat sinks with stuff that actually works, bolted the heat sinks to the motherboard and casing and got rid of the shitty X-clamps, threw in some arctic silver to get the heat flowing from the CPU and GPU chips to the heat sinks a bit better, and plopped the new fan right over the main heat sinks which throws pretty much all the heat out of the system. With the fan connected right into the system's power supply, the fan comes on with the system and turns off when the system shuts down. Works fine but the fan doesn't pump the air like mine. Does it's job though and keeps everything cool enough that there should never be an over heating issue or cold solders ever again. After 3 hours of continuous use the heat sinks are warm to the touch (rather than cool like mine) but nonetheless you can directly touch the things and you wont get burned in any way. I'm happy with it and after putting it through it's paces I haven't found any issues with it. Yet another tinker fix by Hab Wolf ^_^

Yup. It's a first gen 360. It's amazing how easy these are to fix for the most part, more of a hassle than anything else. Microsoft didn't exactly put much thought into these things. Between forgetting about ventilation, fans and heat sinks during the development stage its no wonder they break down so often. Luckily, like I said, they are easy to fix.
The 1st gens still work as good as the new systems. That's why I didn't get a new console. Only real advantages of the new ones are bigger hard drive space and a half decent wifi receiver. Other than that the systems are almost identical. I figured I'd save a few hundred bucks and just fix what was already salvageable.
Not by much. The new systems are a little smaller but it's nothing like the change between the first gen PS2 and the flat one. Obviously with the new fan on there it's bigger than what it originally was but oh well. It doesn't really get in the way. Just set it on top of something. Lol.
