ink, then digital.
Aside from the cover, this is one of two additional images I'm making for the upcoming edition of Jadeclaw (this and Red Pandas, woo!).
Since it's just these two images, I'm not going into any particular world building; that tends to help when there's a -lot- of work to do. So instead, uh... I dunno, insert something about vanity and poise :)
I was pointed to the peacock in Kung Fu Panda 2 as a reference, though I have to confess I haven't seen the film. I'm not sure how I missed it when the movie came out, might've been busy or some other movie was out that I saw instead. Will have to download and watch it, if there's anything more Jadeclaw related coming down the pike, since it seems to be practically sibling related.

Very cool illustration, indeed!
The peacock in Kung Fu Panda 2 is well worth seeing. After seeing that movie I can't think of a creature so well suited to the big screen (and big villain); just with the use of the feathers and wings as a framing device, they can basically produce any scene exactly the way they want. It was all very well done.
