Another second season moment from my Equestria dreamscape. A couple weeks after the Fields of Fire Feast, Ponyville was getting all decked out for biggest celebration of the autumn. Nightmare Night. Since both Petina and Carousel love Halloween back in the Angel and Knight dreamscape there was no way we were not going have costumes. The question was what costumes.
After giving it some thought I decided on something from Equestrian popular culture. The newspaper in Cloudsdale is the Cloudsdale Cumulus. Like newspapers in our world has a section devoted to comic strips. A popular strip is a silly slapstick slice of life comic strip called "The sky's the limit!". One of the main characters is this wannabe hero a pegasus stallion named Impact Crater. He is a somewhat bumbling but likable individual who tries to do the right thing but often only succeeds in making a hole in the ground with his body, for some reason I feel like can relate to him http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7159689/ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7245698/ . Still no matter how badly he screws up he is always back in a couple strips ready to carry on the good fight. Impact's wardrobe usually consists of a brown leather flying jacket, flight goggles, big dumb scarf and tall black boots on his hind legs. Just imagine your stereotypical 1920's barnstormer and you've got the idea. Fortunately I already had the black boots from the outfit for the Scratch concert http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7470843/ , and Rainbow Dash gave me a pair of goggles when I finally went an entire flight lesson without crashing. So all I needed was a leather jacket and a scarf; as typical in a case like this our household turned to Ponyville resident source for all things fashionable, Rarity. After some rummaging through random chests and trunks she produced a battered brown leather jacket and white silk scarf about six feet long. Perfect! After a bit of haggling I was able to rent them for a reasonable price. Later when Rainbow Dash saw my outfit she said I could've just gotten a large pasteboard box as big as my body, cut some holes for my head, legs, tail and wings, paint it reddish brown and gone as a brick instead. Thanks Dash!
Petina decided for something a bit more racier, but still recycling as many things as she could from both her's and Carousel's modest but growing wardrobes. Petina decided she was going to be a pony vampire/succubus. From the local joke and novelty shop she purchased some fake pony vampire teeth. Using the same black corset she wore with dress to Octavia's performance she was able, with Rarity's assistances, to temporarily attach a pair of white fabric and wire bat wings to the corset. Fortunately both Petina and Carousel have the same hoof size so Petina was able to borrow the black boots that Carousel wore to the Scratch concert http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7461577/ . The only other items she had to buy was a studded leather collar from Manehattan, and the final accessory a red tail band that went around the base of her tail. It also had two silver bells that jingled every time she swished her tail or walked.
Carousel decided on something more playful, and again with Rarity's assistance our golden earth mare was going to be a butterfly for the night! While the butterfly wings were very light they still required a fairly extensive harness to properly hold everything in place. To hide the rig Rarity modified a simple, short, pleated dress of buttercup yellow cotton to hide the harness but not cover her cutie mark. The wings were of pasteboard and were painted to roughly match Carousel's golden yellow body color. Accenting the wings were spots of deep violet. The final touch was a quick pair of butterfly antenna fashioned from wire and painted the same deep violet color.
Nightmare Night found us in the center of Ponyville having a grand old time with Pinkie, Twilight, Rainbow Dash and Applejack. Now myself along with the rest of our household knew that Luna was probably going to make an appearance in my dream so I was not caught quite as off guard when the Princess of the Night suddenly dropped in on the festivities. The question was how different would Luna be in my version of events. It was still an awkward evening for all but not quite as eventful as the series.
Luna's biggest problem was her attempt to over assert herself in her first major appearance in Ponyville by herself. As a result she was a bit heavy-handed and this was not helped by the fact that it was Nightmare Night which added to some of the uneasiness amongst the party revelers. Also the fact that she dropped in unannounced did unnerve many of the revelers and local officials like the Mayor. No one likes it when their boss drops in on them unexpected. Finally she did have some problems with the volume button. Just because you can go to eleven doesn't mean you should.
I later asked her why she decided on Nightmare Night for her first visit to Ponyville; her answer was twofold. One she knew that Nightmare Night was one of the most popular nighttime festivities so she thought it would guarantee her the largest number of subjects to be seen by. Two, she wants to show the world that she is no longer Nightmare Moon and that she can be trusted by the subjects of Equestria. Although with hindsight the cloak of living bats didn't help her in that department. Finally there was a unspoken reason for Luna's visit. Luna desperately wanted to show that she was able to conduct herself in public without her sister acting constantly as a chaperone for her. The only time I have seen or heard of her being outside the palace of Canterlot has been in the presence of her big sister. Even her involvement against the Lord of Shadows had been orchestrated by her older sister.
Of course Twilight tried her hardest to make the Princess feel welcomed and for our part we tried to keep her company to. Petina's theory was if other ponies saw some ordinary ponies associating with Princess Luna then would realize it was okay for them to do it to! Unfortunately for us most ponies in Ponyville consider us anything but ordinary so the plan backfired in that sense. Of course most ponies thought that Twilight could approach Luna since she's Celestia star student and powerful mage in her own right. Eventually some hurdles were conquered and all in all it was a pleasant evening under the stars. That was one area where Luna was really able to make a connection with the inhabitants of Ponyville. Twilight may know a lot about astronomy but nothing beats talking to the pony who has actually raised the moon and has made the night sky the way it is for you view and enjoy.

Another post already? Damn, you've kinda been cranking them out lately. Loving the costumes. That big grin you got really seems to fit the character you chose. Carousel looks like one of those people who wish to go Trick Or Treating but unlike Pinkie, knows she's too old. Petina's costume is...appropriate. Looks like she can't decide whether to drain someponies blood, or seduce them. I find it very interesting thet your subconscuos seemed to insert you all into the episode without actually doing anything to disrupt the canan storyline.
Well I'll admit that I do want to get the time to do some more posts since my dreamscape has roared ahead of the current story/dream arc. In particular starting next posting the dream arc starts directly confronting the problem of Applebloom.
I find it very interesting thet your subconscuos seemed to insert you all into the episode without actually doing anything to disrupt the canan storyline.
I guess my subconscious has decided it would be more interesting to see how myself and the gang would fit into the episode. Still have some affect on events but not alter the larger overarching plot of the episode.

Already I can hear all of the pony fanfic writers sharpening their pencils to write Daring Do/Impact Crater shipfic. I'd imagine that any crossover stories would have them in an Indiana Jones/Marcus-style relationship. I can now imagine a scene where Impact Crater is wandering through a foreign bazaar, sticking out like a sore hoof, shouting "Does anypony here speak Equestrian?"

I bet Carousel was positively giddy about going as a flutterpony. The only way this would be even more perfect is if some other pony went as a smooze.

*slaps forehead* I just realized that Impact Crater is really the ponified version of Launchpad McQuack! It fits perfectly! Bumbling hero, genuinely nice guy, loves to fly but crashes all the time, the entire classic aviator's outfit...

Hee, hee! I didn't think of that either until you pointed out. I did rather enjoy Darkwing Duck what little I have gotten to see. I just assumed my subconscious was ponifing another character of mine from anime series that I started watching in dreams called Bravo Strike http://www.furaffinity.net/view/743486/. Within the Bravo Strike there is a BBC TV show that several of the characters from the Bravo Strike universe like to watch called "The Little Things Matter" http://www.furaffinity.net/view/868294/ the pilot of the Pox Terra http://www.furaffinity.net/view/868332/ is a rabbit by the name of Nigel Hamptoncrater http://www.furaffinity.net/view/868484/ who happens to where an outfit similar to Impact. I wonder if my subconscious also used Launchpad as a template for Nigel to?

Well, it was said in-episode that the costumes were meant to fool the Nightmare into thinking there weren't any ponys around. Dressing up as a different pony kind of ignores that.
I'll bet Petina got a lot of mileage out of those tail-bells.

And it just hit me -- Carousel in effect re-created Rarity's wings from Sonic Rainboom. And got Rarity to help! I'd have loved to see Rarity's reaction as she realized that.

I see her more here as some sort of alicorn from hell than a demoness, tho. I guess she thought having three horns and two tails (one of them thin and pointy) was overdoing it.

I can't tell if she's trolling or just being "herself" somewhere that she thinks doesn't have the same consequences. After all, she only got the one talking-to from Celestia, and that was for bringing others into Equestria. The flirting, the dancing -- none of that has garnered her more than attention.

No, no Pinkie Pie was the instigator of much of Luna's discomfort that evening, and always had a way of twisting poor Luna's comments into pretzels and making them sound horrifying proclamations and threats. Petina noted with much sarcasm in her voice that Pinkie had much potential in the field of journalism.
