07/28/2006 - I've uploaded a new image showing the original sketch I doodled back in 1996, the "cool" version I completed originally, and several details. Enjoy!
07/22/2006 - I've re-uploaded the image in what I consider to be the "final" state. I've warmed the piece up considerably, and added quite a few details. I've also gone in and cleaned-up some of the existing elements, like the weapon in his left hand, as well as others. Comments welcome!
04/02/06 - I love this piece. Based on a sketchbook entry from 1995, I painted this image entirely with Photoshop CS with my new Wacom Intuos tablet. Shellback stands alone in murky bog waters trying to outrun The Creeps. He's not doing so well. I need to add some definition and smaller details, but the overall gloom is intentional. I'd be curious to hear what comments may come before I add my next round of changes.

This is looking just great! I am really loving the overall posing, composition and color! I like how the Creeps are comming around the tree. I'm glad I'm not in Shellback's position!
I really like all the diffrent textures, especially the one on the tree. They look fantastic.

Hello there! Thanks! Yeah, Shellback was my very first anthro, created way back in 1988 when I first discovered the TMNT. (Whom I still love, btw). I never really considered a "furry" version of anthros until the TMNT comics cameod Ninjara (Archie series) and it suddently dawned on me: Hey! It's time I start creating more characters!
Thanks again for the comments!

Thanks so much!
I'm trying to make The Creeps as [wait for it,.....] "creepy" as possible, and the lighting has a lot to do with how I do that. I want them to blend in to the background a bit, until you see them and then they're all you can see. Thanks again for the comment!

I've begun a new approach to my work, one that focuses more attention to the environment so that at bare minimum, its as important to the overall image as the character(s). Enviroment and atmosphere are paramount to a good illustration, and I'm finally understanding that.
Thanks so much for the feedback! I a-purr-ciate it! :)

Whoa! That's amazing! The compositioning and lighting is nicely put together. Overall I think this could make fore a great cover for a comic or a video game. The only thing that got me was the aligator/crocodile? I think a little more detail could have been good, but this is still awesome!
Great job!
Great job!
Awww t'anks! *snugs* I'm happy to have pleased you! You can expect a lot more like this from me.
As for the alligator, this image is about Shellback and his interaction with the Creeps, so all of the detail is up near them to draw your eye to the middle. I've left the surrounding elements at lessening levels of detail as you get closer to the edges so that you return back to the center. The alligator is only a fourth-level element, so I didn't feel it necessary to make him pop-out more than he already is.
Thanks so much for the comments! It means a lot!

Thanks so much! ... You're already on your way! Painting digitally is the same thing. It uses the same general principles and comes down to knowing how light works. But learning that skill can take a lifetime, so it really doesn't matter where you start or in which medium.
I'm far from a master!
Thanks again!
