didn't really know how to title this, I almost decided to put it in the scraps,
but i decided to throw it out on the main page.
it was a joke I did about something someone had said on the
radio the other day. the guy had said something about recalling an old
twilight zone episode where society had figured out how to make gold
and it became valueless, sounded awesome.
but that wasn't the cool part of the moment,
the best part of that show was that they were talking about
hydrogen fuel cells to power rocket ships and that they are going to
(if not are already) have stations set up on meteorites where they can
stop a ship part of the way and fill the ship on more hydrogen,
and what made that even cooler is that he said that the even a small
amount of this fuel could be used to power every rocket ship that has
ever been made....that we know of. lol.
so i said to that...
if i knew how to make gold i would tell every person that i knew,
because why should people fight for things that keep you constantly
competing, why not band together and join in talents to make something
stronger...
I guess that's why i never understood sports.

I don't think telling everyone how to make gold would be a good idea. The idea of that Twilight Zone episode is the same as the concept Syndrome from that movie The Incredibles was putting out (if you've seen it).
The idea is that by there being too much of something, where anyone and everyone has it (gold in the Twilight Zone episode, or super powers in The Incredibles) it ceases to have any value, and becomes useless. Telling everyone how to make gold would simply make it so gold was worth increasingly less, until it was worthless... thereby doing no one any favors, and perhaps hurting a few people who depend on having gold for their livelihoods.
Maybe it would be better to share out the money you could get by making gold with everyone, since there's never enough of that.

but,
there would be no need for money at that point.
its just as a balanced nature,
plus money is not the only use for gold.
its one of the best medals used for electrical conducting.
in that same broadcast the guy also mentions Neapolitan
discovering aluminum because it was a new discovery and he
had temporarily made a large sum of money on, until it
became openly used and now people use aluminum for everything
why shouldn't the same be done for gold.

Sadly, there is always a need for money, and it's use is so universal that it's unlikely you could ever make enough to fulfill everyone's needs for it. Gold isn't quite that dynamically useful, and it's value lies in it's rarity.
As for what else gold can be used for... yes, that would be why you were selling the gold you made; so it COULD be used for those things. At the same time, you would be able to keep your friends and family and maybe even your country out of debt, and pay for a lot of the things that would improve the value of life for everyone you came in contact with.
If everyone could already make as much gold as they wanted, it would become devalued too quickly. Think about your aluminum comparison. Aluminum can be used for a lot of things, from cars to cans. Gold isn't such a versatile metal. And also... you only get a nickle for an aluminum can. Imagine how much that same can would be worth if it was made of gold. ...then imagine how useless it would be if it was made of gold.

I remember years ago,
people telling me to always sign my art and
make sure not many people will see it because
you wouldn't want people making money off of
your ideas...
but as I started to grow, I realized how stupid
that really sounded.
so now i just don't care, a good handful of people
know who I am, so I feel safe in that knowing
my work won't be stolen or infringed on.
and even if it is,
let them.
its a funny joke to the people who know truth in it.
I love the boot leg stuff, and not because of
it plagiarizing someone better, but because sometimes
it comes off as painfully obvious which makes it the
more funny. In a way It would almost feel honoring.
if you hadn't laid the ground work no one would
understand the joke, so in that logic your already
immortalized without having done more work.

I suppose this is why i feel like I continue to dwindle away from
the human race...
but, aside from gold being money,
i think it seems like one of those things that could be
used for much more, even as a kid i though,
gold has to have more of a use on this planet then to simply
"look good" otherwise, why is it so overwhelmingly desired
and needed.
i think there is something more to it.

Dunno, people liked it way back when, because it was not only pretty, but didn't tarnish or rust like other precious metals. And the fact that it was rare, but not TOO rare.
Not sure how well it functions as being money anymore, very few places are on the gold standard these days, all we have is imaginary money. It is worth alot of imaginary money but still.
I imagine it has more applications in more modern technologies, most of the modern metals do.

I think a good example would be video games in this case. Look at Diablo 2 for example. Everyone knew how to get gold and get it easily, not everyone knew how to make Stones of Jordan but enough did that they flooded the economy while being rare enough to replace gold as the defacto monetary use for between player transactions. Prices were no longer gold but the SoJ standard. People desire an easy way to base transactions between each other. Needs to be easy enough to get while hard enough that not everyone can get it with out working for it. So just making Gold Common wouldn't mean anything in the long run. Something would replace it...Hell as it is, most countries don't even base their currency on gold any more anyways. No matter how much Ron Paul wants it to be.
I wish there would be enough food and drink for everybody.
I wish there would be enough sex for everybody.
I wish there would be enough space for everybody.
I wish there would be enough air for everybody.
I wish there would be enough shelter for everybody.
I wish there would be enough energy for everybody.
I wish there would be enough education for everybody.
I wish there would be enough entertainment for everybody.
I wish there would be enough creative outlets for everybody.
I wish that as a result of the above, there would be no requirement for anybody to make a living.

Will never work. Competition, not cooperation, is the driving force for progress.
That's why the nice collaborative ants have not developed a civilization in hundreds of millions of years... while territorial and violent apes have space stations orbiting the planet.

You should dig a bit more into the background behind 2001...this book would be a good starting point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialec....._Enlightenment
I think there's a few more variables other than cooperation that prevents ants from attaining civilzation were humans have. But if you really wanna make THAT argument, as flawed as it is, I have to point out that there are a lot of much more competitive species that doesn't have any civilization worth speaking of.
Also, one of the tipping points for the development of civilization is the invention of language, a tool that is mainly useful because it makes cooperation possible.
I could see the argument that you need competition as well as cooperation to make a society work, but the argument that competition is the main or only force for progress is just wrong. Empirically wrong.
Also also, I was being facetious when I called myself a socialist, I AM a left-leaning European, which in most americans eyes default to "Socialist!", and rather than trying to explain the finer points of Scandinavian politics, most of the time it's easier to just go with it.

My point is that adversity and difficulty make species evolve. Man would never invented fire if the climate was warm all the time and there was not nocturnal predators to fight off. Yes, language was essential for mankind to develop a civilization, but the origin of language came from the necessity of cooperation and communication during the hunt. Again, progress came from necessity and adversity.
My point is, utopias would never work, because in an environment without struggle and competition individuals would eventually become lazy and dumb.
Cooperation is just when a group works together to get over an obstacle or enemy... so cooperation is just another kind of competition.
Competition is not the main reason for progress... is the ONLY reason for progress. A guy named Darwin told me so.

I already talked here about that Russian novel where a scientist discover the core of the Earth is filled with liquid gold. He drills until he obtains an unlimited amount of gold, then he ships it to America and sells it at two dollars a brick. People male long lines to buy gold bricks until everyone has gold and it becomes worthless...
At that point the mad scientist has all the cash and becomes the ruler of the world.

far out,
i had a story I came up with years ago,
a bit similar, but it was a man who finds a small green planet and
starts cultivating it. the planet is small and the plants grow very rabidly on this
planet, so he starts to have these plants shipped out real abundantly
and makes a large sum of money on doing this, but other people find out
about his idea and move to the planet and start picking off sections of the planet
to also farm. it get so overwhelmed with people trying to do the same thing that
they kill the planet from exhaustion because it was too small to maintain so many
people.
it was just one of those storys that popped in there years ago and I never really did
more with it then talk about it.
but, considering what you mean,
yea, one guy with a great idea can either make or break the
world using exact same power.

1)Technically gold is scratch. Unless you want to get into splitting atoms and that tends to be disastrous.
2) I totally agree about gold being basically worthless, it's only value being a slightly better conductor than copper and resistant to corrosion.
3) I'd rather do it with diamonds than gold.

Sports or capitalism... Honestly I would say that I wouldn't tell anyone. Simply because it would cheapen the act and they probably wouldn't want to know. that's right folks probably wouldn't want to know this valuable skill. I forsee myself fighting for nothing if I were to side with 'the people' as it were. Really I'd slowly but surely try and build a benevolent dictatorship from my endless amount of funds and indeed material.
Gold?
Read about Albert Sabin.
He discovered polio's vaccine and gave it royalty-free to the world.
So, what really matters when you find gold, if you keep it for yourself, gets profit teaching others how to do it or helping who needs?
I'm sure your pure heart would share the secret because you're a good person.
What really matters is your own morals. People normally are corrupt and greedy, that's not something we can avoid.
