I'm thinking it was started by "lobsternaut" on SheezyArt, a sort of postmodern cartoonist/illustrator/funny-animal artist who didn't really like furries and was making fun of the way some people made "Renamon" into their own personal concept with a complex background all serious and emo and stuff. :)

But that's not a furry fandom phenomenon, it's a general fan-phenomenon and it will never die!
