did a little extra work for my boss when he was short on manpower. it was a long 26 hours, lol. as a token of his apreciation, he hooked me up with a very nice SKS in wonderful condition. Composite body with a folding stock. will be putting a kit on it soon. it shoots very well. i'm considering making this my primary. we'll see after i play around with it a bit and get some accessaries for it. the only downside? now i've got to start stockpiling 7.62 because its so hit and miss trying to find it. still, more than worth it.

I like the SKS better than the AK - better machining, accuracy, and design concept.

will have plenty of highly competitive vendors. That's how I buy my ammo.

No, I'm an aerospace weapons physicist turned rancher. I've been an amateur gunsmith/collector/shooter since the age of 12. The AK can survive more mud, sand, dirt, ice, and neglect, but you are lucky if you get one that will shoot a 3" group at 100 yards. The SKS has less hardware rattling about before the bullet leaves the muzzle, and the moving parts are closer to being axisymmetric. It can be made more accurate and is capable of going beyond the spray and pray school of combat. Here is more about me and my gunfurry predelictions in the text below the picture):

If you are interested in self-defense, I urge you to get something bigger than a 9 mm. A cop once told me that more cops get killed by dead criminals than by any other kind. He went on to explain that a lethal wound is not necessarily an immediately incapacitating wound. For use against humans, the .45ACP is just about ideal. The Glock 21 has a large capacity double stack magazine and the simplest possible controls. There are lots of other double stack high cap .45ACPs on the market if you don't care for the Glock's trigger feel.
well you know, I don't seek to kill in such situations. there once was a guest cop in a tv show who talked about self-defense and he said shooting at the attacker was the last thing to do. he said that whenever possible, the procedures should be:
1: shoot a round in the airs.
2: if the attacker tries to approach you, shoot a round in his legs.
3: shoot one round in the chest if the attacker still tries to harm you.
4: If the situation worsen and you have no other choices, aim for the head and shoot.
Of course not everyone dies or gets incapacipated by a bullet in the head but I guess that if the guy survives, it'll give him a serious warning, granted he can still think straight.

The links that I provided above will connect you to a couple of very competitive marketplaces. They even have lists of FFL dealers that will accept mail order gun deliveries and run the feds' required Bradey check for a fee. The Glock 21 will probably cost less than the Beretta.
SKS, nice... I've wanted one for a while...
Try this site for some ammo.... It's cheap

And is it 7.62x39, or 7.62x54R ?

Dump the folder and put wood back on, You can't buttstroke somebody with that folder without it collapsing.
Thing is...Chinese or Soviet? cause that depends on the bayonet if you want that back on.
Otherwise SKS' are a sweet weapon, better made than a AK-47, keep the 10 round box magazine, the 20 rounders are junk, the detachable 30s are worse.

Nice SKS! I have one myself, though with the wooden stock and chinese style bayonet. I've put so many crap 'Wolf' brand rounds (stay away from them) through that gun and it still shoots true!. Like any gun, cleaning after every use will make corrosion a non-issue. :)
I do have to say, this is NOT a home defense rifle, unless you're sitting in your home, defending it from invaders coming from outside at a distance. The penetration of 7.62x39 is far too great unless you're in the country and won't likely shoot anyone else if you miss the person. (not to mention the round can still travel through walls even after going completely through a person!
Finally, stay away from the large-cap magazines. I'm about to put the old 10rnd fixed magazine back on mine, due to such bad feeding problems from the 30 round detachable clips I've had on it. And I didn't buy these bargain! Having 30 rounds to shoot is only worth it if you can get through a magazine without a jam! :D The trade-off for a 10 round with stripper clips is so much more worth it. :)
