Yeah. Best starry skies I ever saw were out in the Australian desert. Hundreds of miles from the nearest city - you could clearly see the misty rim of the galaxy. I used to see nice starry skies over home back in the 80s, but then they changed the color of the streetlights to orange and it washed them out.
Yeah, I say the same thing, "I don't have those at home". Then again I live right next to NYC. But there are good stargazing spots not terribly far away... Harriman State Park, Delaware Water Gap, Pine Barrens, High Point, heck just go an hour away in any direction! But best of all is Cherry Springs State Park in PA. (I can personally attest to the Delaware Water Gap, the others are on my list of places to try if I'm nearby.)
