Another Rifle that wasn't mine, but built for a customer (my boss actually). This is his "Zombie" build so the name just seemed appropriate. This rifle actually was one of the easiest to put together I have ever done, everything just seemed to click. We haven't shot her yet and I feel that she will need a little tweaking to let her run at her full potential but that will need some testing.
I suspect that I will be doing some moly-resin on this gun, just mixed up a really good day-glow zombie green which I would love to use on some of these parts to give it more of a "zombie" feel.
Parts List:
-Vltor VIS-3 Monolithic Upper Receiver
-YHM 20" Chrome Lined Fluted barrel
-Spike's Tactical Dynacomp Extreme
-Troy Low Profile Gasblock
-Zombie Defense Z-4 Lower Receiver
-Magpul PRS Stock
-Magpul Rail Ladders
-Hogue AR-15 Pistol Grip
-Vortex Viper 2.5-10 Scope
-American Defence Q.D. Autolock Single Piece Scope Mount
-BCM Gunfighter Charging Handle
-FailZero EXO Coated Bolt Assembly

Actually, you may want to take a look into some of the Titanium Nitride coatings companies are doing, now. They're visually similar to gold, but unlike gold, they're low friction and extremely hard and wear resistant, so it'll protect your firearm and hold its shine quite well. And it still looks awesome.
Seeing this made me wonder what you'd do with a Saiga. 308, which, in my opinion, would be a better zombie scenario gun just for the range and ease-of-maintenance alone. Maybe work it into sort of a mock-SVD with a skeleton stock and a PSO-1 scope on one of those receiver-based side mounts, but with all polymer furniture in urban pixel camo, just for that tacticlol factor.
Lol, i disagree on 2 counts.
1. The ak will be an absolute bitch to find parts for after any real period of time, if we lived in an eastern block country it would be different but as it sits right now. The ar platform will be much easier to repair with found parts.
2. Ammo, ammo, ammo, 7.62x51 and 7.62x39 are relitivly hard to find calibers in a true survival situation. Again if we were in the eastern block different story but 5.56 is so much easier to find (police and military not to mention civilian stock piles)

1. This would be a valid point if AKs were really that prone to breakage, but they're so damn sturdy that it should theoretically hardly be an issue. Conversely, an AR would require periodic maintenance. Further, we're talking about a Saiga. 308, which has a differently-proportioned set of internals, but if we were talking about just a generic AKM type rifle, consider that WASR-10s, MAC-90s, and those flimsy Norinco things are pretty popular these days, so it's not altogether impossible or even unlikely that you might stumble across a few in a zombie scenario, since everyone that owns one would be out running around with it. And then realistically, unless you have some kind of secure bunker to repair a rifle in, you're probably better off just dropping a broken gun and picking up another one.
2. In terms of ammo, you're right. 5.56 would be a breeze to find in abandoned military stockpiles (already packed into magazines to boot, even though Army issue STANAGs are kind of awful and contribute more to jamming than direct gas-impingement does, or so I'm told), but ammo, though less convenient to load into a Saiga .308 magazine, would not be impossible to find, as it's what they feed M240s with, and those are pretty commonly mounted on helicopters. It's also a common hunting riflr round, so a Cabellas or something would be a viable source. Even with a normal AKM, lots of gun stores and similar establishments stock 7.62x39, so either one is still a better choice for an AK caliber than something antiquey or uncommon as 7.62x54 (RomAK PSL) or 8mm Mauser (Zastava M56).

Would like to preface this with the statement that I love the AK, it is a great tool for what it is good at lol. This debate is all in good fun :)
1. You actually put into my point, it is never a good idea to state "my gun will not break much." Rifles under use break, period aks simply do it less than other rifles, and i would rather have a gun, which i can get parts for (an Ar-15 is much much much easier to repair int he field the an ak, trust me I work on them all day). The fact that you have a specialty ak actually doesn;t help at all, a 308 ak needs special parts wich will be almost impossible to find period. Again Ar parts will be on every cop or military body you find in addition to a whole bunch of civilian people out there.
2. I personally if I was gonna use an Ak would go with the 7.62x39 simply because it's what they ak was designed to use, it runs the best and you don;t need anything special (special parts mags and the like). You actually hit it on the head with the availability of ar-15 MAGS, any body you loot will most likely have a couple loaded ar mags and that means ammo ready to use RIGHT NOW, lol not in a few minutes after you strip the ammo out of whatever box or mag it's currently in.
3. The other thing which i didn't mention is a pretty obvious one actually. Range. An ar-15 properly built with a 16 inch barrel is rated to work out to 600 yards (mine fore example"czarina" on this site is a 800 yard proven gun), a GOOD ak is usually rated out to 300 maybe 400 with the 308 version. In Z-times, if it's staggering around out in the middle of the street or field it's a zombie and it's a good idea to kill it as fast as you can (usually) so I would rather take the shot from further away because that equals less risk to me.
4. This one is really a subsection of 2 lol, but I'll put it as a separate section all it's own because of it's importance. you have a 308 rifle using probably metal ak mags am I right? weigh your gear, you are looking at a loaded mag in 308 weighing probably close to a pound each. Where as my ar-15 P-mags weight about half that fully loaded that means that i can carry twice the ammo in 5.56 that you can in 308. Something to consider when as we all know Cardio is so important lol. Rifle weight is also something to look at, my rifle (again Czarina on here) with optic and mag weighs around 8 pounds, pretty heavy. A Saiga 308 with standard furniture and no mag or optic weight that much on its own.
((I work at a gun store where we talk about this shit all the time lol, so i have alot of ready answers, we have a 308 guy at the shop who uses the same arguments as you just have, side note is recoil, the 308 in a dedicated platform (m14, FN Fal, H&K G3) all recoil in their standard build about twice as much as a stock ar-15 so getting back on target takes at least twice as long, in the time it takes a good shooter to put 2 or 3 rounds on target with a 308, a good shooter with 5.56 can put 6 or 7 rounds on target.))
