Oh, I'm pretty glad I made this render to post here, because it helped me see some solutions for some of the issues I've been having.
Subdivision modelling easily ends up too mushy for my tastes. (Arguably it's too clean, but given that I'm averse to z-brush I think it's a job of messing up the normal maps a bit once it comes to that)
