Range: Proton Torpedo: 50 kilometers. Concussion Missile: 90 kilometers. Rate of fire: Both torpedoes and missiles can be fired one at a time or in salvos up to three per launcher. Fuse: Torpedo: Impact or proximity 15 meter range. Missile: Impact, proximity or air burst, 60 meter range. Maneuverability: Both: 44 G. Capacity: Usually four torpedoes and four missiles per launcher. Other configurations include 16 torpedoes, or 20 missiles, or 20 proton bombs.
5) Ordinance Hard Points (x6): Six removable hard points can be installed on the spar the engines are mounted on to carry additional ordinance, although the additional mass reduces speed and maneuverability; therefore ordinance is only carried here when the maximum amount of firepower possible is needed.
Range: Varies per ordinance fitted. Rate of fire: Can vary depending on ordinance, though most common ordinance is released one at a time or in a salvo up to 6. Capacity: Usually 6, but can be more when smaller munitions are carried.
"I don't care how obsolete you think the Y-Wing is, 'cause when you're pinned down by half a dozen tanks or you need some heavy close air support, those fork tailed devils are your only true friends."
-Tiree Vander, Y-Wing ace
The Y-Wing starfighter known by its radio call sign of Blue 29 is a custom modified ship owned and piloted by the freelance mercenary duo Tiree Vander and Amethyst Shadowflare. It began its life as three separate ships, all manufactured several years apart by Koensayr Manufacturing and came together in a junkyard over the span of roughly 13 weeks as Tiree and Amethyst cannibalised engines, weapons, sensors, and multiple components from the three Y-Wings to make one fully functional ship.
The basic platform on which Blue 29 was built is a BTL-S3, the two seat version of the Y-Wing and its most common model. After completely stripping off nearly every component and leaving only the basic spaceframe intact, its soon to be mercenary crew buffed and sandblasted the corrosion from it and any damaged structural components were completely replaced. As soon as that was finished, the ship was outfitted with its new sensor arrays and avionics systems.
Avionics of the rebuilt fighter would include not only the systems of the standard BTL-S3, but those of the BTL-A4 single seater and the Longprobe reconnaissance/scout version. A full navigational computer and backup hyperdrive augmented the hyperspace jump systems of the astromech droid and the second hyperdrive allowed for deep, long range spaceflights and ensured an ability to return home even in the event of combat damage or other disasters. A second ANc 2.7 tracking computer was also installed and linked to the turret mounted cannons to enable the main laser cannons and the turret cannons to have their own dedicated targeting and tracking systems which not only increased the number of targets that could be identified but also the number that could be directly engaged, effectively doubling the ship's capabilities.
Armament comes in the form of the standard -S3 Y-Wing, although they feature a number of modifications. First is the cannon turret mounted on the top of the cockpit. Originally carrying two ion cannons, these were replaced by Amethyst with a Borstel GN-40 twin blaster cannon scavenged from a combat damaged Firespray 31 patrol ship and refurbished. To keep its abilities to disable and assist in capturing enemy ships, one of the original SW-4 ion cannons was retained and after some minor refitting of its turret mounts, it was located above and in between the barrels of the blasters. The turret itself was also modified to allow for 20 degrees of depression below horizontal to increase the field of fire, making it effective for covering fire while the ship is on the ground.
The standard Arakyd Flex Tube torpedo launchers remain fairly standard, however their ammunition magazines and their loading mechanisms have been modified to accommodate the Dymek HM-6 concussion missile as used by the A-Wing interceptor. Standard ordinance load out for each of the launchers is four Krupx MG-7 proton torpedoes and four concussion missiles, although alternative loads are possible. For heavy assaults, the launchers have been optimised for rapid fire capability. Up to three torpedoes or four missiles can be launched near simultaneously from each launcher, and the launchers can be fire linked, allowing for six torpedoes, eight missiles, or three torpedoes and four missiles to be simultaneously launched. After the first salvo is fired, the launchers need 4 seconds to cycle the next set into position.
For most combat missions, the port launcher has concussion missiles preloaded and ready to fire while the starboard launcher has proton torpedoes ready. The fire control and targeting computers for the launchers have been given a dual interface system and both Tiree and Amethyst can control and fire them in combat. During normal operations, Tiree will use them in strafing runs against capital starships and ground targets, while for precision target destruction and long range work, Amethyst will target and fire them.
As is standard on all Y-Wings, a pair of laser cannons is mounted within the nose cone of the fuselage and runs its full length, and although these have been fitted with an advanced cooling system and are linked to the upgraded targeting system, they are unmodified from their original factory condition. Standard firing sequence is the basic alternating shot pattern common to most starfighters for highest rate of fire, and for maximum accuracy and hitting power they can be fire linked for simultaneous fire. Rounding out the ship's weapons are a set of 6 hard points mounted on the underside of the spar that connects the engines to the fuselage. Various types of weapons such as extra bombs, torpedoes, missiles and gun pods can be fitted, however their added mass degrades maneuverability and speed. Weapons tend to be fitted here only when maximum firepower needs to be brought on a mission.
For defense, Blue 29 carries the standard Chempat deflector shield system, however this has been augmented by a feature long lost on nearly every Y-Wing in current service; the factory original armour plating. Having been removed due to the ship's needing constant maintenance and having strong enough shields to compensate in Alliance service, Tiree and Amethyst replaced them on Blue 29 to augment their defensive strength even more without having to add extra shield generators or a more powerful shield system. This enables power that would have gone to more shielding to be used elsewhere on the ship, most notably the enhanced and expanded cooling systems that keep the hotter than normal running Y-Wing within safe temperatures. As a final purpose, they serve to make the ship easily distinguishable both on the ground and in combat. While many pilots would avoid this as much as possible for obvious reasons, Tiree and Amethyst both like the fact that they stand out; their skills a pilot and gunner respectively are first rate and they want their enemies to know that they're dealing with “Top guns”.
R2-C5 is the astromech droid that has the rather labourious task of monitoring the modified ship and all of its systems, but like all astromechs of the R2 line it is a task she takes in stride. To save on mass and provide extra protection, C5's internal components were removed from her standard chassis and permanently assembled directly into Blue 29's astromech socket and then covered over by the ship's armour plating. In addition to the standard astromech functions of monitoring ship status, calculating hyperspace jump coordinates and effecting repairs in flight, C5 has also been given a greater command over the ship that she has now effectively become one with.
When Tiree and Amethyst leave the ship docked anywhere, C5 can utilise the turret cannons to drive away would be saboteurs and thieves. Low powered “warning shots” will be fired first, and should the aggressors continue, they will be met with full power shots. She can also activate Blue 29's shields to protect it from attack as well as prevent anything from being attached to or broken off it and should worse come to worse, she can activate its repulsorlifts and engines and move the ship out of the area.
