This is the Daibutsu, the Big Buddha, in Todaiji Temple in Nara (the capital of Japan prior to Kyoto, which was capital prior to Edo/Tokyo). It's the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana. The scale doesn't really come through in this photo -- it's almost 50 feet high, and weighs somewhere over 500 tons. The hall it's located inside is the world's largest wooden building -- and it's only about 2/3 the size of the original hall, having been rebuilt in the early 1700s.
