When I did this... before I laid down the colors, I pictured him sitting there in the
snow admiring the strength of a single flower surviving in the harsh weather...

wonderful. the stark background offsetting the character in the foreground brings to mind the images of being high in the mountains where the wind whips and lashes at every bit of your being, sending the cold deep within your soul. this piece is powerfully executed and transcribed in many ways, from the character braving the cold yet still displaying the forethought and deep insight to ask "what a marvelous gift of insight nature has given me on this day. I wonder how such a little guy can be so powerful with such overwhelming odds?" to the fact that he is using a nodachi (Japanese great sword) sized bokuto (wooden sword) probably as a walking staff to both defend himself but not mortally wound and as (from what I see) a walking staff. this is a very well done example of endless wonder and joy in the midst of extreme harshness. congratulations on a job well done.
