Made this fellow in sculpting class, though I can not take full credit for him. We were paired up in partners for our welding project. The only requirements were to use circles, triangles, and squares/rectangles in our designs. We could use some scraps from the yard or bring in our own stuff. My partner works with engines and brought in several components. We laid them out on the table and stared for about a half hour before I suggested some of the parts reminded me of a clockwork/steampunk owl. From there we exploded into a mess of digging for parts and brainstorming. He suggested we make some of the parts movable and add in some LED lights for the eyes. While I cleaned up the parts and sandblasted metals he set to work figuring out framework. I welded some of the pieces together which was super fun, and I also came up with the interior design to keep some of the components moving.
The eyes move- one eye rotates while the other clicks into various positions. The chain and gears on the belly move together and there are 3 moving/spinning internal parts. If given more time (we had less than 2 weeks to complete this) we actually wanted to brainstorm how to hook up a small motor and make all the parts move together. But we tossed the idea out when we realized just how much time we had vs how much work would need to be done. As it was there were hours spent outside of class working on this as it was.
We really ended up setting the standard for the next class on this one XD the instructor loved everyone else's pieces, but she said "I look at everyone else's projects and I wish I saw more of THIS" so she's changing her criteria for next semester and possibly taking the squares/circles/triangles welding project and turning it into a steampunk sculpture assignment.
In the end... My partner got to keep this. D: As much as I LOVE this thing, I'm also the nice guy/pushover and ultimately decided that he deserved to keep it over me. He fell in love with the project, and spent more time on it than I did. So he deserved it waaaaaaay more than I did. But I worked on/designed this too so I at least have pictures to share.
