While touring Panama Manu Koa and Kalena Pau visit one of the locks that raise or lower boats as they're going through the canal. This particular lock has a bird-cam set up, and Kalena Pau is just noticing they're on Candid Camera. The people operating the bird-cam will be very excited to see a pair of red-crested cardinals far north of their usual range.
Commission for
Lanakila. Done mostly with markers, background adapted from one of the actual photos from the canal bird-cam. After looking at a bunch of canal photos, I was very impressed with how those humongous container ships are engineered to JUST manage to squeeze through the canal locks.

When I worked at Wilhelmsen in Savannah, GA, I'd see the ships come in. The sides got pretty beat up, and almost always left paint in the canal, so the more fastidious shipping companies would put crew members over the side with ropes to touch up the paint whenever they docked (the Indian and Chinese ships always looked BADLY beaten, and those companies would just run them until they come apart in mid-ocean. Literally). Panamax is 13 TEU (13 containers) wide, or about 104 feet (actual canal size is a few feet bigger than that--it only LOOKS close, because those ships are so freaking huge)
This is awesome, Roz! I'm sooooo happy and impressed with the final, coloured image. You did a wonderful job on that cargo vessel! Very realistic!
Thanks for drawing the pictures from my imagination and transporting my birdy characters to places all over the world. I love your style and bright colours you used for the commission. I think it's awesome that you drew inspiration from the Panama Canal bird-cam picture to create this picture.
Thank you so much for the artwork! It's a piece that I will enjoy tremendously!!!

I found the webcam you referenced. Not a bad depiction.
The furthest south I ever sailed in the Navy was Mazatlan, Mexico. I did make it to Australia, though. We just never went towards South America. The Panama Canal would have been interesting to see... if that would have even been possible. I know there's some places the US Navy can't go. The ship would have easily fit, though.
