So, when I was putting together the journal describing the Queen of the Pirates universe, a strange idea hit me. Granted, she belongs in a world of superheroes... but my one true love has always been space ships not spandex. XP
Anyway, here's the first/second coolest electrokinetic in the superfur fandom... reimagined as a space pirate. :P
Name: Lady Kayla Bowles
Species: Nijorn (Silver fox breed)
Eyes: Steel Gray
Hair: White
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 125 lbs.
Build: Slender
Age: 23
Occupation: Privateer/Tramp Trader
Known Relatives: Lillian Bowles (mother, deceased),
Daniel Bowles (father, deceased)
Group Affiliation: None
History: Born a commoner in the capital city of Primagen, there was little suggesting the vixen’s life would take the direction it did. Kayla grew up never knowing her father; the male seemingly disappeared shortly after she was born. Her mother raised her the best she could, but as the younger Bowles grew older, Lillian became ill…
A rare Nijorn who could not successfully mesh with the medical nanites that were prevalent throughout the Five Kingdoms, Lillian Bowles was suspect to many of the diseases that once plagued her people. Kayla on the other hand inherited her father’s genes for symbiosis and successfully adapted to the healing robots injected into her body at birth. As a result, Kayla learned to care for her ailing mother.
As time continued to pass, school started to stop working out for the vixen, so she decides to lie about her age and enlist in the Nijorn navy at seventeen; send her mother a generous portion of her pay every week. Life as a sailor was an adjustment but Bowles would come to surprise everyone including herself, becoming selected for helm and navigation school shortly after completing her basic training.
Upon completing her education, Kayla was billeted to a defense frigate several months before the raid on Primagen. There she reunited and caught up with her classmate Helli Joki, spending several months in relative boredom before their ship was caught up in a futile attempt to stop the privateer Theodore Drake from ravaging the system. Their vessel was promptly crippled and boarded; the frigate’s crew put up a fierce resistance but was ultimately slaughtered except for Kayla and Helli.
What happened next was a whirlwind Kayla wishes she could forget. Being taken aboard Drake’s ship the Black Sun, separated from Joki, and forgotten about in a lost corner of the slave pens… She still remembers the screams and the stench of blood from her fellows in the pens.
Eventually she was remembered and by a stroke of luck forced into the kitchens, meeting the first of several allies aboard the ship, the human giant Daniel Sullivan, and gaining access to an area that would prove crucial to her escape from the Black Sun. Meeting the rest of her eventual crew either by chance or through Daniel and his sullen friend Sharon Aurin, the vixen and her co-conspirators began to put together a plan that would either earn their freedom or get them all killed in the attempt. It took far too long for Kayla’s taste to gradually sicken several important crew sections and arrange a power spike in key subsystems but once everything was put into place, the plan went about as well as they dared hope.
The ensuing jailbreak was quick and marked by brutal combat between the escaping slaves and security forces. Not all of Kayla’s friends would make it out, more then a few of the human and Nijorn prisoners earned their final peace that day, but the bulk of the rioters made it to the shuttle hangers as battery control experienced a critical system failure.
Managing to get their vessels to a friendly port, the survivors parted ways to see what sort of nightmare awaited them at home. For Kayla, it was an unpleasant discovery not entirely unexpected. Her mother had not survived the planetary bombardment, she had been also listed as deceased, and her childhood home had been reduced to rubble. As the vixen struggled to put her life back together, she was given a most unusual request from a most unlikely individual; the deputy governor of Primagen had heard of her exploits aboard the Black Sun and approached her with a Letter of Marque.
Bowles mind swirled as she considered the implications, yet in light of everything how could she refuse? She accepted, was promptly knighted without ceremony, and granted a ship that initially had seen better days. Piecing together a crew and getting the Matriarch’s Honor back into shape, the vixen readied herself for a new chapter in her life…
Personality: A bright girl who had a hard life and endured an extremely harrowing ordeal, Lady Bowles is a guarded, introverted individual who is slow to laugh and rarely smiles. The loss of her mother in the sacking of Primagen cut particularly deep, the elder Bowles was the last of her family; leaving Kayla paradoxically pining for companionship yet finding herself largely unwilling to take those first steps. After all, if she learned anything recently it’s that life is both fragile and transitory…
In addition to a personality as cold as a Primagen winter; the young vixen struggles with a dark fire burning inside her, the cry for vengeance is a particularly strong one in her heart. Only time will tell if her thirst for revenge will destroy her, be sated, or die unsatisfied. Until then, woe behither privateers who fly the Albelion flag, especially Theodore “Bloodclaw” Drake….
Abilities/Skills: Combatively, the vixen is extremely skilled with her navy-issue sidearm and subpar with anything larger then a handgun. In regards to melee weapons however, she is an exceptional swordsman; almost supernaturally adept with everything from the rapiers favored by high nobility to the exotic curved “katanas” used by the red and black pandas of Mish to repel boarders. However she is at her most deadly armed with both at once, swinging her saber while firing her laser pistol with vengeful fury.
Out of combat, she is a skilled navigator and helmsman, top of her graduating class for “driving” virtually everything short of a battleship. While given the same education in economic mathematics as any other Nijorn, the race’s legendary mercantile prowess skipped Kayla. While a very bright lass; the girl has no real head for managing finances beyond the basics, relying heavily on Joki’s own skill with numbers to maximize profits from raiding and trading.
Forced to be the “man” of the house for her sickly mother, Kayla has a surprisingly reasonable grasp of cooking but is unsurprisingly tomboyish and unskilled regarding other “womanly” arts.
Weapons: In battle Kayla charges wielding a laser pistol and an Mjolnir-class powered saber. While power swords with their ability to project a sheath of energy that enhances the weapon’s cutting ability are popular amongst Nijorn nobility, Mjolnir-forged blades are somewhat unique. Instead of a forcefield, the capacitors in Bowles’ sword generates a powerful electrical field; giving her weapon the appearance of being wreathed in a thunderstorm and allowing her to strike with the fury of one, trading the normal armor-rupturing properties of a regular power sword for a potent stun attack.
Outfit: Aboard the Matriarch’s Honor, Kayla wears her old naval uniform with a few small adjustments. Reddish-brown boots lead up to white silken pantoons, ending at the waist with a wide-buckled belt. A black armored shirt extends from her waist to where her shoulders meet her neck.
Over her old duty uniform, the vixen added a thigh-length red petticoat. Made from a sturdy armorweave, the coat can keep out bullets and shrapnel as easily as it can turn aside rain. Initially she declined to wear a hat, indeed she rarely does. But apparently somewhere in Mister Sullivan’s own hard shell rests a bizarre sense of humor, the human seeing fit to give her one black tricorne hat as a gift of friendship. When pressed, her cook would merely smile and say “it suits you.”
The Matriarch’s Honor: A Courier A-Class stellar clipper, the Matriarch’s Honor is a refurbished vessel gifted to Kayla with her Letter of Marque. Originally a Nijorn fast freighter, the Courier hull has since been adopted and modified by the Five Stellar Kingdoms for everything from specialized freight to Q-ship detail for the Albelion Navy (the “A” in the A-Class of Kayla’s particular ship.)
Originally built by the canine Albelions to hunt pirates, the Matriarch’s Honor was initially unarmored and could carry as much cargo as a normal Courier vessel. It did however come into Bowles’ possession with a pair of plasma batteries carefully worked into the ship’s profile. Upon entering her ownership, the vixen promptly used what she could of her savings to armor the hull and upgrade the interior.
Now, the Matriarch’s Honor has become a perfectly balanced vessel for Kayla’s ambitions. While lacking the firepower to challenge any navy ship larger then a fighter, it is more then suitable for holding even the largest freighters hostage, possesses enough space to make haste with particularly valuable bulk cargos, and can take a hit almost as well as it can dole them out.
Crew of Matriarch’s Honor: Fighting along side Kayla during the slave riots that nearly tore Bloodclaw’s warship asunder was a motley band of Nijorns, Humans, and Albelions the vixen encountered during her days as Theodore Drake’s prisoner. While some refuse to have anything to do with pirates or privateers, others jumped at the chance to join blades with her again.
Daniel “Mister Sullivan” Sullivan (Terran Alliance, Cook/Scrounge): A human of mixed ethnicity hailing originally from the frontier world of Nahcatac, an arboreal jungle world renowned for its game meats and the hardy settlers who live there. Daniel never really elaborated on what inspired him to leave home and become a steward aboard the Alliance liner Sightseer but skimming his profile with the Alliance Spacer’s Guild, Kayla noticed he was “recommended for entertaining Albelion passengers” and “a culinary hit with carnivore sapients.” Between those gems and his barely hidden fondness for both of her engineers, Bowles has a very good idea what his reasons were. Unfortunately, suspicions about his mental stability after pirates boarded the Sightseer during Bloodclaw’s siege of New Los Angelos effectively blacklisted him from his profession. Daniel returned home to find himself unemployed…
A tall, brutish man never seen without his trademark serrated Bowie knife, Daniel proves to be a surprisingly benevolent individual at least towards the vixen and her crew. That does not mean he’s a slouch in a fight though. In addition to his blade, the human keeps both a revolver and a short-barrel shotgun concealed within his jeans and dirt-brown duster.
Gypsy Queena (Albelion, Engineer): A slender, daschund-like Albelion female, Gypsy was a bright girl who had the misfortune of being born in a Central Galactic colony. This in itself wouldn’t have been a particularly bad thing but Papa Queena liked to gamble and had a hard time winning where the house was rigged in every way possible. Unfortunately, a factory accident would claim his life just after Gypsy finished her apprenticeship. The young lass and her mother found themselves both indentured in order to pay off her father’s debts, her mother sent to a textile factory on an obscure company world while she would find her journeyman rank spent on a company freighter.
The black-haired female never could bring herself to tell Kayla exactly what twist of fate sent her to Bloodclaw’s ship as an engineer’s mate, her normally bright green eyes lose much of their sparkle when the conversation heads in that direction. But when the prisoners revolted, Gypsy sided with them without a second thought. While not without serious consequence, she does not regret her decision to join the vixen’s crew.
Helli Joki (Nijorn, Engineer/Gunner): Kayla’s roommate at the academy, the tallish brown-furred Nijorn was a cheerful vixen once quick to laugh and help Bowles remember what it was like to be a woman. All that changed for the engineer when she was taken to Bloodclaw’s ship. Spending her time aboard as an unwilling “joygirl”, Helli would not leave the Black Sun the same person. When Kayla met up with her again, she was a bit shocked by what she found. Joki renounced her posting and promptly began to let herself fall apart. Chestnut brown hair was grown long and tied up into a bun, her pale blue eyes grew cold, and the once joyous girl let herself fall hard into the cup and bowl.
Bowles struggled to not cry at the sight of this surly, overstuffed drunkard that was once her best friend. Indeed, Helli used to bring… other thoughts to Kayla’s mind and in some ways still did. Convincing the other vixen to get back into space took more effort then the rest of her crew but she couldn’t bear the thought of leaving her behind. Granted, Joki still needs to learn how to trust. But as Kayla walks by and sees the other vixen’s enormous rear sticking out of a maintenance hatch, she has to admit… the view isn’t all that bad.
