For and 's 100 Theme Challenge~

Artist Statement
For the first image, 'beginning', I wanted to create an image taking inspiration from three of my favorite stories: Alice in Wonderland, My Neighbor Totoro, and Pan's Labyrinth. The first two were a heavy presence in my childhood, and I feel that they've had a lasting influence on my art an writing. I love the idea of slipping into a fantasy world where reality and the bizarre blend into something truly fantastic and inspiring. While I saw Pan's Labyrinth later in life, it still has earned a place in my heart as a more adult interpretation of those beloved childhood stories.

So in this piece I sought to blend the hint of darkness I've come to love in art/books/movies with the sense of adventure and fantasy of my childhood. Beginning a challenge like this is like jumping into an adventure. It could be wonderful or it could be horrible, but I want to see what's at the bottom of that rabbit hole, and I know that no matter how it ends, I will enjoy the ride.
