Now imagine if doctors still walked around like that these days out of traditoon, like judges with those robes and wig...as if some kids weren't afraid enough of going to thr doctor XD
I think back on those days, those masks were some sort of primitive gas mask...not too sure if those offered much protection though.

Well in those days they thought that smells and 'bad air' caused the sicknesses, since usually places with poor hygiene obviously saw much higher rates of sick people. So the bird mask things had herbs and clovers and such stuffed in the beak to counter the smell, hopefully keeping the doctor from getting sick.
