I really don't get to upload half of the stuff I draw...
This is still a WIP, but I drew this around early 2011. It's for a book but the project kinda stalled, and I didn't get to color it yet. (I wish I could, but I don't really know where to start or what materials to use and it's hard to work on unpaid projects when you have to make a living!) Some characters are also still missing in the middle.
Since it's online in SOME places but hardly anyone saw it yet, I thought I'd share it here so it doesn't just waste away on my harddrive!
There's a lot of stuff hidden in this picture, but I won't give that away yet! :D
If you'd like a challenge, name all the animals! I think pretty much all of them are actual species that live in South-East Asia and I tried to draw them more or less accurate.
...if you'd like even more of a challenge, try find the dolphin... and the whale.
...yes, this was a lot of work, the inking alone took me 40 hours or so.

You should do it! My advice is to think of a theme and possibly a lot of gags, then draw some sort of composition/landscape, and then just start drawing characters and keep adding them until it's completely full! At the pace you work at, your picture would be epic in no time :D
This is amazing! Complexity of this picture is stunning. If it is in color I would make it my wallpaper at least. :) Hey, You shall create few wallpapers. Not necessary this complex :D .. but for example a standalone lion in a funky pose. If You put it online with donation button I wil donate for sure. Good wallpapers are valuable.
There are so many unique, interesting, cute, and funny, elements to this that I would be here for two days listing what I love about this. Instead, I''ll keep my comment in a general perspective. This combines all the fun of the seek and find games from children's books/magazines and the joy of such wonderful character designs. It makes me think of a page/illustration from Pogo. Your art gives me that Walt Kelly vibe and it genuinely makes me happy.
Also... I see what you did with that dolphin. Still looking for the whale.

You've really outdone yourself Henrieke. When I was a youngster my Dad bought his children a series of Time Life books that dealt with one interesting part of the world or another. My favorite paintings were the ones that showed the various creatures one would find in their environs in the Jungle, River, Ocean or forest. Not only have you depicted the the creatures accurately, but you drew them as charming cartoons. Great work.
I like the mudskipper with the hip-hop outfit *g* I'd like to name just a few species that cought my eye's attention: the prevost's squirrel (even recognizable without it's colours!), the water dragon, the oriental small-clawed otters, the banded archerfish, mangrove horseshoe crabs, proboscis monkey (oh I love this one and the guy with the big nose, so funny! XD), Owston's palm civet (great work on the details on this one!). Concerning the birds, I just know the eurasian spoon bill's name. The flying dragon is hard to determine because of the colours missing. Could be Draco maximus or just Draco volans.
But there are so many other species on this picture, I can't recognize them all. I just named the few that cought my eye immediately :3
This picture is so great, I just love pictures like this! I couldn't find the whale and the dolphin, though :(

Good job! The spoonbills are Royal spoonbills, a species that lives around those parts. They look a lot like the european ones though!
:O I hope I saved all the references for when I colored this! I think with the flying dragon I didn't go for a very specific species since it was hard to find good reference... for coloring I'll just pick one that looks nice though!
Some birds should be easier to regocnise when they're colored; Raja Shelduck (the chick, too), Australian Pelican, Collared kingfisher, Stork-billed kingfisher, etc.

Agggh amazing stuff! <3 I stared at this for about ten minutes, haha. So much fun to look at.
My favorite vignettes have to be the big-nosed guy with the proboscis monkey, the forkbill (XD) and the archerfish. :P And the hourglass figure on the bird's tail, haha. And that fiddler crab, he's too cute for words.
... Was the resemblance those two frogs have to Naveen and Tiana intentional? lol

Thanks!
No, the resemblance wasn't intentional, I just drew toony frogs and somehow with inking the female frog really started looking like frog Tiana. I'll color them brown with a white belly (as mangrove/crab-eating frogs are) so they should look at least a bit less like them. I got that comment a lot!

wow that is a pretty busy piece. Though I dunno if I found the whale or the dolphin but in the left hand top corner in between the tree I see a long body and a eye (the hole in the trunk is the eye).
I wish I had time to figure every species, but I also am busy doing a commission. This is a really awesome pic. Sometime I have to work on something like this. I know it will be hard to figure what to color and all first, but I just go with what I want to color first (either that or just start with the first character on the corners and work my way around) but I know you wil figure it out sometime. :)
