After drawing the last OC (or at least a concept there-of) I felt like drawing another for more practice.
This time around its Deris, one of my oldest (in terms of my creation) dragon characters. He's actually a fairly young fella (about 7 years old equivalent) but you wouldn't guess it by his looks or mannerisms, though he still has him moments where it becomes obvious how young he is.
I don't generally work in B&W much anymore (save for traditional) since I love throwing colors around but I just don't know what colors this guy is so I went B&W. I know what he looks like form wise (save for his horns that seem to forever change haha) but his colors elude me. All I know for sure is that fog is green and his base color is a dark grey of some sort.

Hey, good looks doesn't automatically mean shag-magnet! And besides, I'd never do that to some random dragon *looks innocent*
I imagine that green fog would make things a bit hard if he's trying to stay hidden, and leave something of a trail in the air. Have you given it a practical purpose yet? 'Cause if it's poisonous, that, ya'know, kinda limits the options I've got here >.>

Oh of course, magic has you on a short leash right now....
Deris is a bit screwed in the hiding department. He's kinda sorta massive. He also doesn't have wings- he's a slow moving land-bound dragon. Generally things leave him alone though since he's kinda impossing looking and its hard to get near him due to the fog. He's really just a huge sweetie though.
The fog is in a way toxic but not in a disease causing way. Deris is something a mutant most acurately described as being "anti-elemental". Not only does he have no elemental powers he neutralizes those of others. The fog saps the energy of those within it (potentially fatal if in the smoke too long) and attacks of an elemental nature are negated by both the smoke or dirrect contact with him. He's effectively one huge defensive wall. Offensively he's pretty limited since he doesn't have any elemental abilities and he's pretty slow moving.

Pfff, he just *thinks* he has me on a short leash xP
I guess being massive, it makes sense to have no wings. That fog's quite a useful defense mechanism, though as you said I imagine it makes it hard for anyone to be around him. Does it sap the energy of *anyone* around him, including those of the same species (regardless of choice)? Or are both the elemental canceling *and* the energy saping 'mutant' qualities? Because if he really is a nice guy, and can't get near anyone (and is land-bound), that'd make for one lonely & sad dragon
Also, as a big fat defensive wall, is there any situation where that's helped him or others in particular? Anything more to a character's backstory always adds more to 'em :3

He's kinda alone from the start. Mutants like him are very rare (he was born of two common fire dragons-your sort of generic mid sized winged dragon) and usually are killed shortly after birth/hatching due to how dangerous they are (without trying to be) or die early on for one reason or another. It'd be pretty safe to say there are no others like him to find out. Another one of my characters who has a special constitution (abnormally high energy reseves and generation rate) volunteered to take him away and care for him so he wasn't killed and with a lot of trouble helped him to learn how to control the fog (which would normally be far worse than its here).
He doesn't care much one way or another about his past and between his adoptive parent and his very, very, veeeeeery annoying "sibling/partner" (battle partner, not sexual, oh god no) he's got himself a pretty strong social circle. Its due to this very annoying partner (Dali) who he's pretty much always stuck with that he acts so mature- one of them has to. Dali is also something of a special case herself, being a world dragon (a symbionic species of dragon that lives in close association with a planet and it's inhabitants though they're generally not aware of their pressence), a species that absorbs energy from their surroundings (but at a far lower rate and over a far larger range than Deris so her impact is not felt by anyone but allows her to be near him without issue by simply drawing enough extra energy to match the rate that he saps energy). She's got quite the back story herself but long story short she made a pact with Deris's adoptive parent a long time ago and although the pact is no longer valid still kicks around because she finds it fun, has nothing better to do, and owes her life to them anyway.
She pretty much the dirrect opposite of Deris, both personality wise and in battle style (she's a glass cannon).

Aah, so he's one of the lucky ones! Even more lucky that he had someone to instruct him. Can he direct this fog, like blow/shoot it at someone to engulf them in it?
Dali sounds pretty interesting, though I am curious what it means to be a 'battle partner,' or rather what the need of such a relationship is. Do they fight in tournaments, some sort of mandatory cultural activities, for survival, for kicks?
Having an annoying counterpart like that also feels very 'fitting' for a character like him, and it sounds like their abilities in tandem can be quite potent (two energy-sucking dragons sounds better than one :P) and based off their strengths & weaknesses, is probably more of a protector to her than she is to him?

He doesn't have a lot of control over it and its quite dense (hence why none is floating in the picture- it falls and pools) however he can alter production levels somewhat and if he opens his mouth a ton comes out (and depending on if he exhales strongly it will go out further but its not like he can shoot it out like a fireball- pretty much imagine trying to blow bad breath on someone thats pretty much how it works).
Deris and Dali generally are peaceful and prefer to avoid conflict (though Dali has a bit of an explosive temper relating to her size- despite being in full control of her apparent size and personally staying as small as possible she gets very pissy about being called tiny or anything a long those lines since she prides herself on the size she managed to obtained/and is still growing technically even though she keeps herself small- their max size increases constantly at a fixed rate which has just as many issues as you could imagine). They sometimes spar or get into little arguements (Dali can make anyone snap after a while) but generally only engage in serious conflict when needed for the one they're both in debt to (though they do so willingly not out of feelings of obligation).
Dali's ability to absorb energy is generally not used offensively since its effect is inspecific and influences a huge area so it isn't noticeable. However pooled together (not to mention her own stores) she's pretty much a walking atombic bomb. In battle he backs her up and she may use him as a shield (meat shield anyone?), though she is very agile and can often simply dodge most attacks, but if thats not an option Deris is there, but yes he's generally looking out for her. In an emergency she may protect him such as destroying/ fragmenting a very powerful/large physical attack if she can and knows its important to do something about it- Deris cannot dodge very well- but otherwise she just stays out the way and leaves Deris to do his own thing.

I shall garlic-breath you to death! I think I get the idea of that
Annoying *and* excessively self-conscious? Man, I guess Deris can tolerate a lot xD
Linearly increasing size limitations sounds like it's own monster of problems though, do a lot of other critters in your world have 'attribute'? I know I sure wouldn't want to be perpetually getting fat! I know that's not what you meant, but that was the first thing it made me think of xP
Meatshields oh meatshields, they are wonderful things, though in what I play they're usually bullet-sponges or shrapnel-magnets and don't last terribly long. And it sounds like you wouldn't want to be throwing a nasty punch at Deris if Dali's in a position to smash your face into the mud (or stones, trees, bunnies, icebergs, etc)

Garlic breath of DOOM. DOOM I tell you!
She's kinda more of an eastern dragon style and poofy. Most of their growth goes into body length though they get more bulky too, but most of it goes to lenght. They grow on average a bit more than a meter a year- given that they usually hatch around the start of when life on a planet begins that makes for a stupidly huge dragon- for Dali on earth she'd be almost 5 billion meters long full size o.o. This is actually neccisary though since only a single one exists per planet so to reproduce they have to find a dragon on another planet AND a young planet with the starts of life. They cannot leave their home planet long for such a trip though so the long length lets them reach out further while maintaining contact with their home. They often coil up off the planet to make themselves easier to spot from great distances away to signal to each other beforehand. They do not need to breath or have a biological system like other organsims since they consist mostly of energy (so the lack of pressure of space isn't an issue they're fully able to adapt to that- its sharp sudden attacks especially when they're small that can screw them up). Unless they want to visible they're generally invisible to anything other than they're own species or those capable of seeing energy. Generally though by the point that they'd be looking to reproduce they're nearing the max capacity of their planet and so don't usually have a lot longer to live- many just make a mad dash attempt to find a mate to give a new planet a strong start now that their home world has gotten a strong foundation. Few reach this point though and worse is the rarity of suitable planets leading to a sharp decline in their population- they're mostly extinct. Dali herself should have died millenia ago if it wasn't for her pact.
But yes, she is like everything annoying rolled up in one fluffy bundle. Makes it all the worse that she's perfectly capible of being a responsible, normal adult (and given how freaking old she is she aught to be a wise critter but noooo she's had enough of that stereotype and is just going to be an immature pain in the rear because she's cute and fluffy and she can). She'll crawl all over you and nest in your hair but hiss and puff up at you if you try to remove her. She's kinda catty that way. And the scary part is she's got the ability to back up her threat if she wanted to. Great protector she is.

Now, he just needs to eat a ton of garlic right before he fights someone else, and he *can* be killing them with garlic breath! xP
That's some crazy critter Dali is, I guess they're one species that gets to discover the limits of space.
So she pairs up with jail-bait boy up here for this pact thingy, and you're telling me nothing *ever* happens between them?? You're cuttin out a great romance plot opportunity here! And some other opportunities... >.>
Oh, and she can be a space elevator (someday) for the first species that attains space travel on her planet!
It also sounds like she's taken to the mannerisms of a cat for kicks, able to torment others and perfectly capable of continuing to do it despite anyone's best efforts xD

He probably could eat a ton of garlic, quite literly, in a single bite. Why he'd want to we'd never know.
Dali's species, although able to look out into space are extreme home bodies. Its kinda like that person who lives on the 70th floor of a skyscraper and works from their appartment. They've got an unbeivable view but never actually venture out into the land that stretches before them, always just looking out off their patio. Leaving the planet is a bit like jumping from that balcony- fleeting freedom before everything comes crushing down.
Lol Dali is like that crazy old lady who mascarades around with a face of youth. Oh god the pedo level there would be horrifying. Besides, Deris sees Dali as an annoying little sibling thing that he has to baby sit to keep her from blowing someones face off cause they called her tiny. Cause she would. You'd have to say it a few times and get her real riled up, but she still would.
Deris doesn't actually have anything binding him to his adoptive parent and is free to do as he pleases, but this is one of those places his childhood shows and he's still very clingy to his adoptive parent and tries his best to make them proud. Even if that does mean putting up with Dali.

Pfff, I only meant *after* Mr. Garlic breath isn't jail-bait anymore. There are plenty of relationships with... big... age differences. Maybe not *that* big... but... still? Work with me here xP
Sounds like her species are very much victims of their nature, is there any potential for them to 'fix' this issue of extinction? And is she even capable of having young anymore?
And at least they've got each other for company. If Deris ever did decided to part ways with Dali, what do you think would be her first reaction?

Lol, that'd probably take a while... but I think he'd still be disgusted by the concept. Not to mention somehow he'd probably feel like HE'S the pedo in the relationship as twisted as that might be.
Likely not, her species is pretty much all but extinct already and its debatable if she's the last one or not since she's far out-lived her natural lifespan (and back then even they were on the decline). She likey could still have young since they don't function via a normal biological system (they are effectively only limited by the energy output of their home planet- they grow older in years but do not really age until they're unable to meet their energetic requirements) however two dragons are required for the creation of new life and very rarely do the adults live after. In the past when the universe was more compact and ripe with young planets they were far more sucessful and breeding wasn't the nail in the coffin, it was just breeding. Its sort of trying to avoid the inevitable now though- even if she did breed it'd only get harder for the future generations. It doesn't really bother her though. She's happy enough to have lived as long as she has and her species is fairly solitary by nature (there is only one on a whole planet...). However, even though she is horribly self absorbed and egotistical if she was given the option, even at the cost of her own life, she would likely create a new one. Deep down, despite how well she hides it she IS an adult and does have the mind of one and will act with due responsibilty in a situation where she had to. She just prefers to act like a spoiled brat.
If Deris DID take off she'd probably be more surprised at the fact that he was leaving the nest than anything given how much of a momma's boy he is. She'd likely be a bit sad all the same though (after she got over her shock) but given her age she's witnessed and been part of more than her fair share of separations to the point its nothing special to her anymore. Deris is a bit unique in that he's been around her (both in terms of actual contact and life expectancy- most people run away screaming looong before they kick the bucket ) longer than most so she's likely more attached than she realizes.

Well if *he's* the one going to be disgusted with the thought, then I guess there's no argument left there :P
And well, as a 'last of your kind as far as you know,' there's not a lot of sense in being mopey about it. I assume there also aren't a whole lot of instances where she really needs to act like an adult though? x3
So buddies for ever and ever right?! Being as old and experienced as she is, she's just being immature & silly for kicks, and maybe to feel young again? My guess would be that hanging around the little kiddo here would help with that too.
Oh, and does she ever do silly little stupid things around him like pull his tail, poke his nose, or play the 'why' game with him? Because those would be the epitome of annoying & immaturity rolled into one

Hah, yeah, neither of them is especially interested in romance (one's too young and truth be told I'm not even sure if he'd be fertile given how messed up his biology is and the other views breeding as a finale in life). Thats not to say Dali doesn't find it cute or what not among others and loves to tease, but its just not something she thinks of a lot for herself. ~Forever Alone...Together~
Part of the immaturity likely steams for the fact that in her species most of your age is nothing more than your size so by taking the form of a very young dragon she's in effect living her childhood over again (just with a more.... "mature"... mind).
Oh yes she does. I'm not sure about the why game (given that she's kinda overly proud so she may feel a bit stupid asking why to things she knows even if just to torment someone). But pulling tail, pulling pranks, keep away, all that stuff she's big into.
Toooorrrrmmeeeeeeennnnnt

Haha, sounds like she'd be an utter terror to live with. And forever alone, together, makes it sound like they're sharing a communal misery for eternity xP
So if she's able to remain small, just how is she doing it, and why? My guess would just be a lifestyle choice, but I've no idea.
And to live with a little fluffy thing that won't. Stop. Annoying. You. And. Can't. Seem. To. Grow. UP. THE HORROR
I feel bad for Deris xD

He is wonderful~~! I'm sure I don't have to tell you but I love doing brand new creatures in B&W when I'm not sure about a final colour scheme... It is so easy to add and remove and play around with different colours when you treat it as an underpainting... those it is easy to end up with a 'dirty'ier image if you don't do it just right but it's not really a final piece, just for experiments :3 Well at least for me!
