If you hit a cymbal with something that big it actually chokes the cymbal because contact with a surface that big reduces the vibration. The mallet hits it but then drags on it as you pull down or away. How do I know this? Let's just say I got in quite a bit of trouble as a kid when I actually did this but with a large rubber mallet from the garage. =P
