Placeholder update page for my comic, Altermeta. http://altermeta.net/archive.php?comic=140
First, lemme address what they're eating: Funnel PIES. It's an imaginary thing that I wish would come to life! It's a pocket of fried dough filled with a funnel cake and a frosting or filling. It's like fried stuff with a miasma of fried stuff in it with sweet stuff and powdered sugar all over. Yes, decadent as it is, remember that kuvrhaks are dragons afterall. ^__^
I'm trying out an old style of sketching from waaaaay long ago. I'm going to work on getting the commitment to draw like this more often. Perhaps I could end up doing the entire comic in this style directly. And bonus deal: Drawing this kind of stuff is a hidden nugget of stress relief! I love crosshatching, there's just something gritty about it I can't get over. It takes me on a nostalgia trip. And I've taken to re-exploring the brief moments in my experience in the furry fandom that exposed me to art like those of cougr and wolfkidd. I cannot explain how both of their art appeals as much as it does, but I think that this pic shows how much they've influenced me lately.
The scene itself is something I've been wanting to portray for a VERY long time. The characters really hanging out, bonding and just being friends. It has this downhome feel to it, and as thekitfox told me it has an Archie look as well. That really hit the spot! I was trying for a definite take on making the characters distinct in their looks, rather than just swapped out hair and colours, and I had the most fun coming up with the expressions. I'm usually pretty down on myself, but I'm honestly proud of this one. I'll have this ONE. *nods*
Anyway, not sure why I feel so wordy about this pic, I just know that when I got started on it and reached this point I had already lost myself in the lines. It was super cathartic. Now to slap inks on it and colour it! .. AFTER I finish a few commissions first. ^_^

I love it when you can tell when an artist truly loves what they do.
I feel the same way when I write, though I do my best to restrain from making the descriptions too descriptive. However, that is different with my case. When people look at my submissions I know they will already be looking at word. In the case of an artist such as yourself, a long, descriptive note such as this lends more to the work and, at least in my case, it leads its viewers into seeing it as something bigger, if that makes any sense.
I love the picture here and will continue to look forward to your future projects as wll as continued pages within the comic proper

Sorta reminds me of the stuff Mercer Meyer did for the Great Brain books http://riddleburger.files.wordpress.....rain.jpg?w=468
Great stuff. Reminds me of a lot of the great illustrations from books I read growing up. Love it.

Looks awesome , just friends hanging out and enjoying a sweet treat together.
Hmmmmmmm...Funnel pies make me think of what you would get if you mixed a custard pocket with a funnel cake.
It sounds tasty, but could such awesome eats exist in this universe?
....One can always dream I suppose...mmmmmmmmm....tasty.

So let me understand lass, is this regarding the pockets:
-They have a funnel cake inside them
-They have a cream filling (I imagine kinda like an eclair?)
-Their outer pouch is fried dough.
...You know, I honestly don't think that would be extremely difficult to concoct. The trick would be attempting to find a way to keep the funnel cake within from getting soggy from the filling. Also, a funnel cake is basically fried dough with sugar, so the event of having them with filling would pretty much turn them into mush.
My suggestion, would be to make them like an eclair. However, instead of baking the pastry once it has been wrapped prepped, fry it instead to create the texture you want, and then inject it with your filling of choice before sprinkling with powdered sugar.
The other matter is, to find a mould of sorts, and create two funnel cakes in more a condensed sense, like a thicker pastry without the holes in them to avoid filling seeping out. To that end, what you could do is place two funnel cakes together with filling in between, and then roll said pastry in cut apart bits of funnel cake, to make something similar.

well if you make the filling less moist and more fluffy, it would be a little dryer and retain it's friedness and rigidity much more easily. But this is a high end carnival food, so I don't think longevity and "keeping" is something they have in mind. I would assume such a thing is best eaten fresh and on the go. Messy, but tasty and worth it.
I may have described it wrong, but the bit about making it like an eclaire is what I have in mind. Whatever works to get the end product in this case. ^_^

In addition, what you could do is make it like the eclair, however, instead of frying the entire package, roll it in sugar, then use a torch to caramelize it. Hmm...the brain is really considering now.
Helps I love attempting to concoct new recipes though. I should send you mine for Peanut Mint cookies someday lass. You might enjoy those, but I haven't perfected them yet.

Heh wow, that sounds neat! (I might use AM as a way to show off new oddball ideas I have for making things like this, just to share the idea plus comics) The caramelizing of the outside sounds niiiiiiice. Then it becomes this nice outside rigid shell of dough and melted sugar with powdered sugar thrown onto THAT.
Once I manage to get the flavour of the peanut butter to come out (which is likely a case of needing more milk-the texture and the mint however is spot on), I'll note it to you if you'd like. As for these, like was said. No promises, but I'll see what I can do. The filling will be the tricky part in order to intergrate the funnel cake within. It might works..best...hang on the moment. Who the hell says the funnel cake has to be shaped like a normal one. If I do up an eclair form, then pipe in the filling, THEN push a funnel cake in the shape of cylinder....
...I think we may be onto something lass.
