(Refresh for edits I have added...I wanted to make her more fluffy <3)
I love some of the ways people react negatively to this character, especially when they feel she is “ableist ” or “insulting” purely by her looks.
I personally have a turned in eye, and while I can physically straighten it I become legally blind when I do so, and can be clumsy as a result 8D. And so, I love to think Derpy is a clutz herself for these reasons!
I wear glasses that “correct” my eye, and I think that’s all poor old Derpy needs for her… issues ;)

Reading Rainbow Derpy FTW. So much adorable in this pic, and I'm liking her hitting the books too.
Can't agree it's merely the character's looks behind the shitstorm though. To me it's the original choice of voice for her that in combination with the rest of the scene pushed what would otherwise be cool into not-cool territory. I'll the first to admit others won't feel that though, and they're not awful people. I suspect a lot depends on how commonly slow clumsy voices were used as playground taunts when you grew up.
Final word: cock-up and not conspiracy. Time constraints and communication fail, I guess.

My take on Derpy, before her first speaking role, was that she was actually very intelligent, but her eyes, clumsiness, and a speech impediment kept ponies from taking her seriously. =P
Also, those glasses fit her perfectly, this pic is ADORABLE. <333 But of course we all love her with her derp-eyes! ^_^

The "attack" on Derpy confused me. The way I saw it, it painted a clear picture that not every pony was perfect, but they all could belong, function, and be friends. Everyone had their own challenges that they had to deal with. Coordination is Derpy's personal hurdle. I liked her just the way she was.
Love this. So fluffy.
Personally, the fact that Hasbro had Derpy changed in the re-release of The Last Roundup was extremely offensive to me. I've come to see her as a sort of figurehead for the mentally impaired, in her own lighthearted and cartoony way. Despite being a klutz, she's still universally loved by the fans.
So when they changed her to make her "normal" I couldn't help but feel wounded that they would look over that message in order to please a small group of people taking political correctness to an extreme.
