The C34 shotgun is a 21st Century revival of a classic weapon, the original World War I Trench Gun. Like the Winchester 97, the original Trench Gun, the C34 is optimised for heavy firepower at close range and makes use of the most current military technologies coming onto the battlefield. For maximum stopping power, the C34 fires massive 4 gauge rounds of Russian origin. Like most shotguns, the C34 can fire a variety of ammunition types, however the "Barricade" slug is the primary combat round. Fitted with a steel penetrator, the Barricade can punch through an automobile's engine block from up to 100 meters away and allow the gunner to disable both vehicles and eliminate enemy personnel behind heavy cover or clad in body armour.
When a canister/buckshot style round is desired, a special flechette round is employed. Loaded with 24 steel tipped lead darts, the flechette rounds allow for the spread pattern of conventional buckshot, while the fin stabilization and the overall shape of the round allow for a flatter trajectory and a longer range, plus better penetration. Traditional buckshot rounds are also available, should the need or desire for them arise. Because the C34 has a rifled barrel and a large muzzle brake, the flechette and buckshot rounds contain their projectiles within a sabot, designed to break apart only after the shell is in free flight, thus avoiding damage to the barrel and brake. Feed for all ammunition types is through a 10 round double stack box magazine loaded through an M16 pattern magazine well for rapid reloading in combat. A larger, 20 round drum is also available, though the size and weight of the drum can make the C.34 a bit more difficult to wield, although the increased ammunition capacity can more than offset this.
To help mitigate recoil, the barrel and breech block will stroke backwards a full 2 inches (50mm) with the force of the shot, much the same way as the Barrett M-82. A circular muzzle brake also helps redirect and reduce the effect of recoil while a shoulder pad further cuts down on what the gunner feels when firing. The firing mechanism is semiautomatic and allows the gunner to fire as fast as he can pull the trigger. Unlike most shotguns which are blowback operated, the C34 is gas operated and uses a modified M14 long stroke gas piston mechanism. For firing lower powered rounds such as riot control and other low/non-lethal rounds that won't have the power needed to cycle the semiautomatic action, the C34 is fitted with a larger than usual charging handle, thus allowing the shooter to manually cycle the action and load, fire and extract ammunition.
Standard sights are M16 pattern "ghost ring" sights, fitted onto the M1913 accessory rail machined into the top of the receiver. A red dot sight comes standard as well and is installed between the front and rear iron sights, although any kind of sight set up the shooter may need can be fitted in its place. Like the Winchester 97, the C34 comes standard with a bayonet lug and bayonet for close quarters combat. Also fitted is a set of mounting brackets to allow a C27 submachinegun to be installed beneath the barrel to add rapid fire capability and an auxiliary weapon without the need to carry a separate sidearm.
