I felt like crap today, so I played hookie from work for a while and drew this.
No ref used aside from the monkey, I wanted to get the style right, I needed no ref for Goku, the first human being I ever (seriously) drew was Goku.
Here in the USA Dragonball was not aired first, it aired years after Dragonball Z... which now, having watched Dragonball, I kind of despise that I was more or less forced to see the two series out of order...
DB in many ways is better then DBZ, it has more plot, conflicts that require more than just brute force to solve, it has plenty of humor (much of it being rather adult humor) and kid Goku is just so much fun. (I am still a deep rooted DBZ fan though, have been since I was little)
Now what does bug me in DB is Goku's appearance vs his age... I figured Goku was like 5 or 6 when the series began, nope... he is 12! I was like wut. SO here I drew him looking more 12.
I was watching DB with a group chat online, and early on in the Red Ribbon saga Goku is playing with a troupe of monkeys... best chat comment "Man Freeza would have loved to see this"

Well the first 10 episodes of Dragon Ball aired before DBZ, but Krillin hadn't even been introduced. So when they suddenly switched over to showing DBZ on the channel I watched Dragon Ball on, and grown up Goku went "Krillin I haven't seen you in forever!" or something, I was like "who the heck is this guy?"
Also my 10 year old brain thought Piccolo was grown up Emperor Pilaf.
*face-palm*
As of last week I finally have all of the original Dragon Ball on DVD. In the fifth season Goku grew up by 3 more years and was almost as big as in DBZ. It became more like DBZ would, but people actually fought rather than floating in the air and screaming to power up. There wasn't any powering up back then. THERE WASN'T ANY POWERING UP. Freaking wonderful.

DB also lacks the monologing and stare-downs, and flash backs, and repeating what was already said (jeebus frecking cripes did we really need Cell to go over his origins yet again during the last fight! Cripes man it took up a whole episode!) DB's plot feels like it stays so fresh throughout the whole thing compared to DBZ
and I bet those 10 eps of DB are what I have on VHS bought eons ago, never saw em on TV, but ohhhh are they ever oh so edited for TV XD

Ahaha, yeah those are probably the episodes. I have those VHS tapes somewhere too. And yeah, censored all over. Rather sloppily in places, like the magic tree in front of Bulma and Goku whenever they're naked. The magic tree that is clearly not a part of the image, and moves around out of sync with the frame, lol.
I also remember it having a different opening. The DVD's have an English version of the Japanese theme, Maka Fushigi Adventure. But I remember when it was on TV (and the VHS tape version) having a made up theme for America:
Dragon ball! Gotta find those dragon balls! Don't stop til you find em all, the seven dragon balls, that's all you really need to make your dreams come truuue!

Dragon Ball > DBZ > eating off my face > GT
I spent an entire summer 2 years ago watching every episode. Dragon Ball was way funnier, and more straight forward. DBZ has WAAAYYYY too much filler, and Dragon Balls filler was useless, but usually funny. The way everything was animated makes me squee ^^ A lot of things had almost no shading, but they used fun colors, and it was toony, so it worked out perfectly. DBZ is still great, but the filler is just too much. Not to mention power levels. It was introduced, and less than 2 seasons later, became totally inert. They kept getting stronger with "the strongest foes yet" with another even MORE powerful guy right around the corner. At some points I said 'oh come on, it's GOKU, he can do anything!' Never watched the full series, but I read the manga and tuned into DBZ Kai when it was on. And don't even get me started on how awful GT was. GT is a failure not made by Akira Toriyama, 'nuff said
