Transit of Venus Morningstar, evening, 6/5/2012
Just to milk the Maya a little more, they were thrilled to learn of a bleeding god sacrificed on a tree that marked the intersection of worlds. "Okay, we believe that" they told the priests, and in speaking of Jesus amongst themselves, referred to Him as "Venus Morningstar." This is the celestial body associated with warfare since the days of the Olmec, but nobody was listening.
Anyhow, after work, I took my 37 dollar Celestron (cardboard, kidscope) over to the kinfolks' house, and we all witnessed the Transit of Venus on this piece of typing paper. Also, because I was concentrating solar rays directly on it, the mirror under the eyepiece started smoking...uh..smoking mirror OH DUDE anyway, I'm hiding under the bed where the jaguars can't get me.

Nice picture.
I have a Orion 105 MAC. We were warned to never point it at the sun without a front filter. MACs fold the light inside three times. They WILL catch fire.
We have a farking big solar filter that fits on the front. I have considered getting a cheap refractor for what you were doing. Do you know how hard it is to get the sun in the telescope without looking or using the finder.? The shadow method does not work with short scopes.
