Technically, what he is doing is wortcraft, not alchemy. Wortcraft is breaking an ingredient into baced form causing the first affect to occur to yourself. Alchemy is when the item is combined using a mortar and pestile causing the four items found within an ingredient to be found. If you would have read the "fundements of alchemy" book that can be found easily in-game, you most likely would know that.
