The chubby green/blue/yellow/red caterpillar I have been caring for since August of last year finally decided to leave his cocoon! He's huge, fuzzy, and absolutely beautiful. Saying goodbye was hard - hope he stays safe out there till he finds a ladyfriend.

Thanks! I just wanted to pet him, he's so soft and fluffy-looking, but for his sake I showed restraint hehe.

It takes that long for that kind of moth to mature??
I thought they went from caterpillar to moth in like less than a month?

I guess it depends on the species. Perhaps since Cecropia are just so dang big, it's why it takes them nearly a year - I only had him a week as a caterpillar before he went into his cocoon, they stay in that for the bulk of their lives to weather the winter.

I can't believe most people think of moths as dumb and dull - they can be just as beautiful as butterflies as I think this one proves. :D

Amazingly, yes! I found the caterpillar last year while trimming some hedges and thought he looked neat, so I googled him until I figured out what kind of buggie he was. Apparently they're not terribly common, but are around and are some of the biggest moths in the country!

Very much so! It was pure chance, was trimming a large bush and noticed the huge, brightly coloured caterpillar on one of the cut branches I was about to throw away. Went and googled it and was blown away.

Yes they are......these guys are quite......I saved him from a fast food joint but I didn't have anything to keep him in so he flew around the car the whole way home

Actually now that I think of it, I had a relative send me a picture of a Hickory Horned Devil a few weeks ago, and I think they grow up to be Royal mothies, yes? Pretty exciting. Glad you came to his rescue!
