So to give you the backstory, starting yesterday afternoon, there was constant scratching and shuffling coming from my fireplace. Figuring there was nothing I could do, I figured I'd have maintenance come out and let out w/e was in my chimney.
Well, the scratching and scraping sounds kept up every so often through the rest of yesterday and into today. When I got home from work today, I wasn't in the door 1 full minute before the sounds started again.
I decided to take matters into my own hands.
Thankfully, an endeavor with a flexible lamp, a mirror, and alot of patience paid off when I was able to reach inside the flu (sp?) and gently take hold of the imprisoned bird. It didn't struggle, peck, or fight back. I think it was ready to get out of there.
When I went to clean the soot from it, it lay very still on the counter while I wet the rag and when I looked at it again, its eyes were closed. I felt panic inside, thinking 'Oh god, no! Don't die!' I gently started to wipe it off and only got off one lil stroke of the wet cloth when it took to flight and flew around my apartment. It eventually went into the bathroom and landed in the tub, so I gently picked it up with a soft cloth and brought it outside, where it took off beautifully into the great outdoors.
Long story short, I feel a great sense of good karma and pride in myself for what I took the time and effort to do, and the end payoff being so worth it. ^^

My mom and I did something like this once. Only the stupid thing got caught in the paneling beside the actual chimney. Luckily my mom hadn't put the stones and concrete up for the mantle yet so we were able to pry open the plywood and fish out the baby bird. One day later and there would have been nothing we could do it would have been covered up permanently. Poor bird was scared out of its wits and sat there like a little shivering puffball. Yay for bird savers everywhere!!!!
I had that twice in my shed. It has a potbelly stove in it that I use in the winter. I put chicken wire on top to fix the problem. In your case, I suggest getting a cap or screen cap for the top of the chimney. It keeps animals from nesting or getting in when installed properly. Additionally, things from clogging the flue that starts a fire.
I had a bird fly down my chimney into the fireplace once (it's a closed fireplace). I didn't realize it until I started hearing lots of sounds coming from the fireplace. I just picked it up and set it down outside. As soon as it hit the ground it just flew off leaving a trail of soot and ash.
