'With full apologies to Patrick Nagel'
OK. So this isn't furry artwork per se, but it's artwork related to a furry-- specifically, me.
A few years ago, I threw together an 'old woman' costume for a friend's Halloween party out of materials I found mostly at thrift stores. I managed to find a bunch of different components-- dress, wig, shoes, purse-- that I thought worked well together because they were all kind of drab, non-descript and monochromatic. Add an orthopedic cane and the piece de resistance-- a bag of Werther's Originals to keep in my purse-- and it all came together in a character I dubbed 'Aunt Pearl'.
Aunt Pearl went over big with my friends. For whatever reason, they loved her-- to the point that they started asking me "How's Aunt Pearl doing?" long after Halloween was over. On my next birthday, my friend Jim, an artist and animator, presented me with this piece of artwork that he'd done, combining Aunt Pearl with Patrick Nagel's iconic cover art for Duran Duran's Rio album. He altered the title to "Rrhea" as a nod to a running joke about Aunt Pearl's, uh, incontinence issues. Yeah.
Aunt Pearl has actually appeared at FurFright in the last couple of years, and I actually wore the costume during my interview for the convention's 10-year anniversary documentary.
(BTW, the following year, the same friend digitally inserted me into the cover of Kraftwerk's 'The Man Machine'.)
