It's still a Theory in the scientific definition of the word. To quote Wikipedia:

A scientific theory is “a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.”

Scientific theories are the most reliable, rigorous, and comprehensive form of scientific knowledge. This is significantly different from the word “theory” in common usage, which implies that something is unproven or speculative.

I guess in that definition it sounds better, but when the layperson says theory, that's never ever what they mean. Fact leaves no room for doubt.

Exactly. The problem is the layperson tends to refuse to learn that the definition they are using is not the only one, or the one being used, because it doesn't support the belief they already hold.
