I think it might be a good idea to avoid specific things that may become old or obsolete in a few years' time. Anyway, nice sketch of Jacky!

That was kind of the idea actually. Jacky might not be able to afford new technology so he plays slightly out of date systems. If I decide to set this back in 1998 he would be playing a black and white gameboy, though gameboy color did come out that year.

New update, this comic is now confirmed to be taking place in 2002 so the PSP is actually too far ahead. Gameboy Advance would be more accurate now.

Jacky's design looks good. Moving the comic to the present day would give his new look even more of a "reboot" feeling.

There are things from the 90s that I miss like playing fighting games in the arcades. These days the arcades can't stay ahead of the home systems in terms of technology so they usually end up with a buch of driving/gun/dance games. On the other hand, setting this comic in present day means that I can make Jacky and S.K. into bronies. That might be fun.

or maybe this can be like Regular Show and I can show everyone playing out of date games.

Well, always remember - they are your characters in your universe, so you could really have them doing anything you want.
