Small portrait of
anbessa's Tedros character. Did I mention I'm in love with oil colors? X-D
Recently some comments about my artwork on an image board made me realize I need to stay more focused when drawing. In the last 3 years or so I've been busy reworking all my basics (studying figure anatomy and composition thoroughly, learning actual color theory etc.) but as a result I kinda cut back on details, so there are still many thing I draw too hastily without applying the new stuff I learned in the meanwhile. Especially muzzles and oddly shaped limbs. So in the next months I'll try to bring my handling of detail up to date.
This was an attempt at drawing more interesting muzzles by following some principles of traditional portraiture; some more notes are on my blog:

Doing anthro portraits can be hard, but most depends (IMHO) on the character design: if it's more feral-like, some distinctive human features that could help with portraiture might lack (like eyebrows, lips and so on). On the other hand, having more human-like features sometimes can make the picture less effective.
I usually keep a hint of lips and brows on my characters, and human-like eyes, too, because those traits can help me work better on their faces.
Love the colors here and the way you laid brush strokes. It's quite sculptural, very volumetric.

fantastico! I'm honoured you chose one of my characters for practising, and I also love the portrait itself. :) one of Tedros' more serious moments, I guess.
hmm, intense stare is intense. pierce my soul, sir!
I'd like to buy the original, but not until late june/early july, I'm afraid. as for shipping, you don't happen to attend Eurofurence? I'm planning to go there on saturday, so I could pick it up there. and maybe pay in cash. :)
