As it says above, this is an attempt on making a fan fiction for a videogame.
I am not as positive about it, but i had a second opinion for it at least, so it is not as bad as it could be. Like the pokemon fan fiction, i hope to have it critiqued on mainly the story and how good of a job i am going to keep from staying too far from the original game plot- while making sure to add my own twists to things.
Hope you like it!

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker: The past to the present
Prologue: A Rusty Start
(Note, this fan fiction is based off the videogame ‘Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2’ All rights go to their respective owners- especially Square Enix and Nintendo. I will be putting my own twists and turns into it to make it different from the original. Hope you like it!)
All around the regions of the world contain special people who can tame the hearts of wild monsters. Those individuals are monster scouts. Every year or so, a special tournament comes to determine who is the greatest scout in the world. The event is known as the monster scout challenge. In the challenge, the scouts will be using their most powerful monsters to fight for the title of champion. This story goes to one such scout with dreams of becoming the champion. The young man is currently hiding inside a crate in order to sneak on to a blimp that is heading towards the monster scout challenge.
The young man opened up the lid of the crate and peeked out to scan his surroundings, careful as to be ready to drop the lid from the slightest sound. While he was looking around, he stopped for a moment to listen to someone complaining about the blimp. Curious, he looked in the direction it came from to see a young woman fixing up her red dress and a man with what appears to be pirates clothing on him. Well, it was pirates clothing to him since he has a bandana on and the kind of vest that some pirates would wear. He was walking over to the young lady as he crossed his arms and he lets out a chuckle. “Well, we’re almost ready to depart. Sorry to keep you waiting” He explained to her. “I’m Captain Keith Bonvar. It is a pleasure to escort the defending champion to the challenge” He said to her. By then, the young man in the crate dropped his jaw in shock. “The champion? Here? Why does she have to go on this ship of all places?” He muttered to himself in worry, biting his lower lip as he waited to see what will happen next. By then, Keith moved aside, offering for her to enter the blimp.
“Please, make yourself comfortable while we finish with the preparations” He offered with a friendly smile on his face, getting a look of doubt and disappointment from the young lady as she moved some of her red hair back in place. “What do you think I am, stupid?” She asked without hesitation. “That piece of junk looks like it will collapse at any moment! I bet it will fall apart not long after it takes off into the air” She said before she turned around and she closed her eyes. “I’ll just wait for my mother to get me a real transport. You can go on without me” She said as she began to walk off, leaving the captain with twitching his eye from agitation before he sighs and he scratches the back of his head. “Good riddance I say, I doubt the ship would have room for an attitude like yours” He said, getting a frozen reaction from the defending champion before she clenched her fists and she growled off.
Just as she was leaving, another guy walked over to him. The guy had quite a bit of muscles to show from wearing a black sleeveless shirt, which goes good with the black boots he has on and long pants. “Captain, once we’re done with the cargo, we can get going” He said, getting a nod in reply before he Keith looked at him. “Very good. Continue with loading the cargo, Greg” He said before he headed off into the blimp to prepare for flight. Greg in the meanwhile was walking right up to the crate that the young man was in, causing him to quickly duck down and get the lid back on. His instincts were right, as he felt himself being lifted, along with grunts that suggest he is lifting something. “Pounding Hammerhoods… Either someone packed a little too much, or I am beginning to lose my touch” Greg muttered to himself as he carried the crate into the blimp. He was put down in the storage hold with a slight thud, allowing the young man to slowly open the lid and look around before he saw the captain and Greg talking about the defending champion.
“That young lady needs to learn some manners. Just because she is the defending champion, that does not give her an excuse to hold that kind of an attitude towards anyone” Keith said, getting a laugh from Greg as he nodded in agreement. “Yeah, but that is just how they are. Thinking they are on top of the world and everything. Plus, with the challenge happening soon, you cannot help but be excited about it” He said, which brought a smile to Keith’s face. “Ah yes, good times. We may not have had much back then, but that did not stop us from sneaking into ships like this… And if anyone ever got caught, the captain would make them wish they were never born” He said as they both began to laugh.
The young man however, was not laughing at that news. “Great… looks like I will need to be careful” He said to himself before he heard them wrapping up their conversations. “Well, no use standin around, let us get the Falcon flying!” Greg said, getting a nod in response from Keith before they went their separate ways, the captain going up the stairs, and Greg going down a ladder. He decided to stay inside for now since they might be coming back to each other to get reports on how things are going.
Not long after they left to their stations, the blimp began to lift off into the sky towards the monster scout challenge, propellers spinning and the sound of the machines gave him the sign of the ship beginning its trip. With the blimp moving, he lifted the lid off the box and he climbed out. He appears to be a young man about the age of fifteen to sixteen, his black shoes silently touching the floors. He moved his silver hair aside to reveal green eyes. He stretches a bit due to being stuck in the crate for quite some time, moving his purple scarf from the front to his back in the process. He then adjusted his sleeveless black shirt and dusted off his long grey pants before he began to walk over to the stairs leading upwards. He stopped for a moment when he was about to begin his ascent before he heard a voice that was coming down. “Oh my! Count, Carrie, where are you two going?” The voice sounded like some noblewoman. “Come back here! There is nothing for either of you down there!” She said as the young man began to hear noise of someone coming downstairs.
He did not have much time to think, he quickly rushed back to the box and got the lid back on top to hide himself. Just as he got the lid secure on, two monsters came down the stairs. One was a Teeny Sanguini, a cute fluff ball with small bat wings that allow it to stay in the air as well as a small demon tail. The white and black patterns on it are like that of a black and white cow. Another was a Great Sabercub, a cute baby leopard- except that it has sharp claws, a pair of tiny fangs that are sticking out on each side of its mouth, and a tuft of red fur that goes along its back, and a red puffy part at the end of its tail. Both were curiously look around the area, probably trying to catch his scent. After them, a young woman came down, looking fancy like the defending champion, but not quite as fancy. She had on a pair of jeans, along with a fancy shirt that has roses on the shoulders and a silver bracelet on her left wrist. “Dear me, what drove you two to come down to a dusty place like this?” She asked them, getting no real response from them as she continues to try and get them to come back up the ship. They both came upon the crate he was in, making the young man worry as the fluff ball looked into the crack to try and find what is inside. Despite his hiding, it must have smelled him or something because it suddenly screeched like a demon, its innocent eyes turned into that of a terrifying demon, its eyes gleaming red and its simple teeth turned into fangs. The young man immediately flinched, accidently bashing against the back of the crate, causing it to move as the fancy lady backed away a bit. The Sabercub hissed before it leapt to the crack of the box and squeezed inside. The next thing that happened was screaming and screeching from both the young man and the Sabercat, causing the lady to rush over to the box and move the lid off the box, quickly leaping back and screaming when she saw the him.
A lot of confusion and chaos happened after that, but in the end, the crew was able to separate the two monsters from the young man, who was scratched up a bit- but nothing serious to him or his clothing. There was the captain, Greg and a few other people down in the storage room with him. The fancy lady was yelling at him for hurting her precious Carrie, which would be the Sabercub, demanding that he was to be thrown right out the ship in some painful way. Captain Bonvar however had different ideas as a smile came onto his face and he shook his head. “Easy there missie, there is no need to be so rash as a monster scout yourself” He said before he looked at the young man, who was looked at each member of the crew in turn. “I can see in his eyes that he is determined to make it to the scout challenge, even if it means having to hijack a ship like this…” He said before a frown began to replace the smile. “However, I will not overlook the fact that you snuck on this ship, as it is a serious problem in my rulebook” He said. “Your payment for coming aboard this ship is to be the deckhand of the ship until we make it to the scout challenge” He said, getting a nod in reply from the young man as he looked at Keith seriously.
With the decision made, everyone got back to what they were doing- although the fancy lady appears to not be happy with the decision. “Now, what is your name kid? Call me Captain Bonvar” Keith asked him. “My name is Zaran” He simply said in response. “Hmph, I would rather call you ‘kid’ for now” Captain Bonvar said before he began to head up the stairs. “Come with me to the flight deck, I will give you your first assignment when we get there” He said while leading the way.
Once on the flight deck, Captain Bonvar turned to Zaran and he gave him his first assignment. “Alright, the first thing I need you to do is acquaint yourself with the crew on the ship. Report to me when you are done” Zaran nodded in response before he turned around and he headed out the doors, finding himself in the passenger room, as most of the people he saw earlier are at that area. He decides to at least introduce himself to the fancy lady, see if he can get a name out of her. It was not easy, due keeping an eye on her two monsters, but in the end, he found out her name, which is Melanie. There was a young lady that was in her mid-teens and in a bunny suit, she introduced herself as Lillian. Then there was an old man, who seemed to have a cheerful smile on his face and appears to be pretty wise- but was wearing ordinary clothes. His name was Horace, and he was the one keeping an eye on the monsters in the monster pen. He offered to show Zaran, which he accepted. When he arrived, there were only six monsters, but most of them looked pretty nice, monsters that he would be proud to have as his first monster. When he got back out, the last person in the room appeared to be a scholar, because she had glasses on and was carrying a bag of books, currently reading one of them. She was wearing a plain yellow dress with a hairband to keep her black hair from getting in the way. He walked over to her as he smiles and he sat down beside her. “Hi, I’m Zaran, what’s your name?” He asked, getting her attention for a moment as her eyes moved to his. “Elizabeth Trevant… nice to meet another scout- one with manners at least” She said before she looked back at the book again. Zaran nodded slowly before he got up and he headed down the stairs to the storage room, then down the ladder to meet Greg. He found the guy working on keeping the ship alive with fuel and keeping it from overheating. He walked over to the engineer as he cleared his throat to try and get his attention. “Hey… I’m Zaran, the guy you carried on to the ship” He said, getting his attention with that bit of information as he turned to him and he walked over to him.
“Heh, so you were the one that was heavy huh? Ah well, what’s done is done. Just don’t get into trouble and we will get along nicely” He said before he went back to work. With everyone being introduced to him, he headed back up to the flight deck to report to Captain Bonvar. When he got back up and reported to him, he was thanked and about to be given another assignment before there was a sudden shaking from the ship, and Melanie was calling for someone to help her out. “Great… what does that woman want now?” He muttered to himself before looking at Zaran. “Go see what’s going on” He said, looking forward to notice a dark storm ahead while Zaran nodded and he headed out to investigate. Upon seeing her two monsters, he could not help but flinch for a moment. The Count was screeching and giving that demonic face all around while Carrie was growling in a threatening manner without anyone to growl at in particular. Melanie was hanging on to the seat as the ship shook again, causing her to growl in agitation as she looked at Zaran. “What are you staring at? Go to that brute of an engineer and tell him to cut it out!” She said while the others were either hold on or trying to avoid being knocked off their feet by the shaking.
Zaran quickly moved down to go check on Greg, finding that the machine is not looking good. Greg was doing everything he can, but the meters show that it was starting to go into the more dangerous levels. “Urgh, I don’t know how much more this ship can take!” Greg said before the engines started to overheat and catch flame. “Damn… It looks like the ship is losing power!” He said before he looked over his shoulder to notice Zaran. “Hey! Tell Captain Bonvar that we are going down! I’ll do what I can to keep us up in the air!” He said, red alarms beginning to sound in the meanwhile as he tried to keep things as stable as possible. Zaran nodded and he rushed back up the ladder to try and get to the captain.
Once he made it back, he reported to the captain about what happened, getting a grunt in reply as Bonvar was trying to keep the ship steady. “Nice to know kid, but I don’t think that is going to help the fact that the propellers are no longer keeping the ship in the air” He said before he looked at Zaran. “Grab on to something- this is not going to be pretty!” He said before the ship started to lose altitude, beginning its tilt downwards as the storm continues to rain heavily on it. Zaran quickly ran to a corner, grabbed on to a pipe and he clamped his eyes shut, hoping that something will happen to save them. Before he knows it, a nasty bolt of lightning struck the blimp by the fabric, causing it to violently shake and lose even more altitude before they crashed into the jungle below.
The next thing he knew, Zaran felt his head throbbing; his body on something soft and cool. He heard a squeak, then another squeak. Then he felt a sharp jolt of pain to his leg, waking him up and yelp awake before he saw that it was the Count and Carrie, with Carrie having bit him to wake him. He groaned and got up on his feet slowly as the two monsters wandered off on their own, leaving him alone at night in a jungle environment. He saw the Falcon nearby, crashed and up on some rocks. He lets out a sigh of relief before he stopped for a moment to check and see if he still has his scout ring- the very item that would allow him to tame and raise monsters. It was still on his finger, but that was not what worried him. The smooth emerald gem on the silver ring was nearly cracked in half, worrying him to the point where he thinks he cannot even use monsters to help out. Determined to find someone who can help him, he began to head over to the ship, exploring the surrounding place in the meanwhile to scavenge for things that might be of use. By the time he climbed up some vines that allowed him to get up to the entrance of the Falcon, he managed to scavenge some herbs and a pebble- in case he had to make a distraction. He walked inside to investigate, finding the place to be a wreck and no one around- not even the monsters in the monster pen are present.
He walked back out of the Falcon, thinking that all hope is lost before he heard a familiar voice to his left. When he looked, he saw Greg heading over his way. A smile came on to his face as he found hope in the darkness, waving over at him as he got up the vines to reunite with Zaran. “Hey, nice to know that I won’t be alone” Greg said as he chuckled and he got down on one knee to be more even leveled with him. “Have you found anyone else?” He asked. Zaran shook his head as he lets out a sigh. “No, you are the first person I found” He said as Greg grunted and he shook his head. “Ah well, I suppose we can search for the others-” He began, only to be interrupted by the roar of a monster from deep in the jungle, causing a bunch of birds to fly out into the open out of fear as Zaran could not help but feel a bit of fear as well.
Greg was worried too, laughing nervously as he looked at Zaran. “In the morning… A goodnights sleep before the search should do us good- as well as doing what we can to make the place homely” He said before he entered in the Falcon to prepare, Zaran looking out at the jungle once more before he entered as well to assist him, questions came into his head while he helped out Greg.
Some will be answered; some will only bring out more questions. The main question at the moment is something both of them are thinking, will they ever get out of the place alive?
I am not as positive about it, but i had a second opinion for it at least, so it is not as bad as it could be.
