Omg, you did the fur on those rats so realistic! O_O
My god you're so pro...
There's no critique normal people like the most of us can give on something like this.. truly something special.. better than what most professionals that I've seen can do.
And the text is just as disturbing as it is amazing...
Really can't express how magnificent this is.

And another thing, I'd like to know what tools you used here...
I'm guesing Watercolors for the paper and colored pencils for the fur... but I don't know anything about traditional art really... Would like to though!
What tools did you use.. and could mention some techniques.. like how you did the shine on the fur? Did you just use brighter colors or did you add some 'shine stuff' on top? =P
And I'm pretty darn interested in making fur... could you just briefly mention the steps you take to do the fur? >.>
I have an infinite number of questions, but I won't bore you with them, just answer those two main questions, tools and fur-how-to, if you want, thanks =]

Hullo!
For this painting I did the entire thing with watercolours. I usually use watercolour and then layer acrylic ontop of it for the fur details and lighting, but watercolours print a hell of a lot nicer, and since it's going to be on a conbook cover I stuck to just the one type of paint.
For the fur on this piece I just layered lots of Sepia and Paynes Grey with Raw Umber washes, leaving the lighter parts of the fun less painted and darkening the shadows. I cheated a tiny bit and added some of the lit furs on the closer rat's ruff with gouache.
If you like I can post some progress photos of the rats into scraps so you can see for yourself. :]

*squees!* That would be so sweet! O_O I would love to see progress shots!
Alright, cool, I'm saving that information for future reference.. So you color in several layers?
I have never really liked watercolors for one reason, and only this reason, I don't understand how you can make the coloring so even.. how do you?
That's the only thing that's keeping me from using it..
After seeing your art I seriously consider taking watercolors up =)
*Awating in suspence for your Scraps section to get updated..* :D

If it knocks over garbage cans and/or eats pets, it's usually considered vermin--or at least--a pest. >;]
Black bears and cougars are routinely turning up in peoples houses, garages, dumpsters, etc., where I live. Last year there was a cougar eating joggers in a park.
Even elk are considered a nuisance animal. =P

Yes, but that is because people are invading their territory, I think those animals would rather avoid human contact.
I always thought of vermin to be those 'disease carriers' and whatnot, though that's just human interpretation of unclean animals that may or may not be true.
But....we haven't had bears in this area for probably 50-75 years (suburban Detroit). ha ha eats pets, that's true. I guess American alligators can be considered vermin too then.
Thanks for the clarification :).

Now...many other people have already commented...but HOW much detail?!?
My drawing hand is running for cover just at the thought of doing that all by hand. You've long had a reputation for near photographic levels of realism - but you're truly outdone yourself here.
Hats off to you, well done indeed.

Oh my god Blotch! The detail is amazing! I bet it took forever to have this finished!
I love the detail in the rats and in the newspaper. The ground and the random bottle cap pull it all together as well.
I love how straight you got the lettering and the neat stories in the newspaper. I love the part where the coyote said he thought he saw the moon but it was actually a streetlamp and he was embarrassed for thinking so!
I hope they get back to the wild and such ;3
Do you know how long it took you to finish this and how much you would charge for a commission? I would love to commission you if I can! <333

Man, how'd I miss this one when first posted? Awesome work. I love the texturing on the rats, particularly the way the fur came out, but pretty much on the rest of them as well. It's simply beautiful work. Congratulations on having it used for the conbook cover. It's well deserving of that honor.
I had never even heard of Oklacon before now. Not that I would have been able to make the trip down from Wisconsin to attend it, but it still would have been nice to be a part of the revolution. Heh. Perhaps in the future, I'll be able to travel around to more of these smaller cons, as I tend to enjoy them a lot more.
