Umm, yeah, speaks for itself.
The price shown is NOT an exaggeration, I HAVE seen journals that artists post speaking of commissions of that price.
Now for starters I know that people can spend their money how they wish, okay, whatever. But $450, on one picture that will be lost to the raveges of time before you know it? I mean with $450 you could buy a Nintendo 3DS, and 7 games, SEVEN GAMES!!! If you played one game a day and beat it you would STILL get a full week of entertainment out of that. But no, one picture is TOTALLY worth it.
And the same goes for icons. I have seen single frame, 100x100 pixel sprite icons for $10-$20. NO! NO NO NO NO NO! If you pay more than $5 for a single picture icon you are overpaying, and if you pay more than $10 for an animated icon you are overpaying as well.
Now I can understand if the artist made a 400x400 icon that will be resized and the icon has Zen, Narse, Nek0gami levels of shading, that may be worth it as there is INDEED a lot of effort put into the icon. BUT, a single SPRITE ICON! HELL NO!
Anyway, just because I know people are going to rip me apart for what I have to say here regardless I will say what I always say, as always this is my opinion. Whatever.

haha, this is so true for some people! though honesty, $10 for a animated icon doesn't seem too bad considering some can be quite elaborate and take a while to animate. but yeha, $450 for a solo character commission is a bit insane, but you always have those with more money than sense.
Art is a luxury product; if you cannot afford the luxury, the artist isn't technically "wrong" for setting up the prices they ask for.
That said, I do agree that the fandom does have something of an unspoken level of balance regarding commission prices and some of 'em just come off as... egotistical. But more often than not it's just a strategy that plays out to the artist's desires. Some folks do $20 sketches at 10 slots for a total of $200. Some artists want that same sum but don't have the time to deal with 10 commissions, so they offer 4 slots for $50 each (regardless of sketch or color or whatever the little details 'n bits 'n bobs involve). Or maybe 2 slots for $100.
$450 is probably a bit much regardless of strategy though. :/

It's interesting, in a way. In one way, for the fandom it's absolutely on the upper end of the spectrum in terms of overall pricing and everything else, there's no doubt about that in the slightest. However, for some of the artists I know of who charge those prices, they are, in a way, justified since they are professional artists and it's pretty much their job, either in full or on the side. And for those costs for a single picture, also depending upon the medium and all and what they offer otherwise (do you get an actual print, etc), it is pretty much in line with professional pricing, if not undercutting it by quite a bit.
In that case, it becomes an interesting look at valuation overall, between the Professional and Fandom levels and what is acceptable for each. Honestly, if I had the disposable income I know of at least one or two people I would commission for a fairly large price, just because I've always enjoyed their work. Then again, I'm saving up for more important things for the time being, anyway!

Hmm... It's still art, after all. It's someone's talent, time and effort... If you've ever seen Todex' work, he asks $90 for a solo picture. It may seem like a lot, even though it's only 1/5th of the price you mentioned, but he is a very good artist, and he probably spends a lot of time on a piece of artwork trying to make it perfect. Some artists here actually make this art for a living, I'm not sure if it applies to Todex in particular. I guess it depends on your quality standard.
Understandable. I've seen it a lot over the years. A lot of the time, the artists that charge what's considered "outrageous" pricing do have a level of quality that speaks for itself. However, I can't really see a reason for such crazy numbers, unless the artist is drawing and coloring on paper made from the last rare tree on Earth studded with silver ribbon or something.
WHO WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY CRUEL ENOUGH TO GO AND PUT "$450." OR MORE ON ONE SINGLE PICTURE OR JOURNEL?!?
THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE OUTRAGE FROM HELL I TELL YOU!!!!!!
Sorry for the yelling and screaming NP. I just get absolutely pissed-off like HELL when seeing and dealing with crimes and sins such as THIS!
CAN YOU BELIEVE SUCH EVIL?!?

...you mean dumbasses actually pay THAT MUCH FOR ONE FUCKING DRAWING! I've never heard of something so ludicrous in my life! The only commissioning artists I watch, apparently are sane, because they sell theirs for around $4-$10 a piece, maybe a bit more for the more detailed ones. What the hell is this; these aren't works painted by fuckin Picasso! They're just as you said: bits of paper that will be lost to time, and to me, they are BULL-SHIT!
I have seen at least 4 of these sort of massive price demands. Hell, I know a guy who wants me to run his deviant account for him and he charges 15$ per tier of picture (sketch, colours, shading) PER CHARACTER, I told him that was a bad idea but he feels that if people want to spend their cash that way then they can spend their cash that way.
Personally I feel you are morally bankrupt if you ask so much for something that honestly has about as much lasting value as a piece of tissue.

Professional comic book artists don't get paid that much per single page.
How do we know it's not set that high as a deterent to people asking for commissions?
I mean... If someone really dislikes being asked for commissions or doing commissions, setting an exhorbitant price of the like might put an end to the requests.

I found this again and it's so true. To pay that much is just an outrage and really I could think of something better to put 450$ towards right now then a fucking picture! Good lord even the prices I have in my head for if I did commissions are nothing over 25$ and that's with full detail!

Also I wrote a journal about commissions a ways back: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2447446/
Waaay less than 450$ XD
Oh well.. you know I'm (for once) not saying this to rant - but art usually takes 15/20h+ each.
Of course, to beat competition I have to underprice.
That's makes it roughly 1$/h.
What would it be if I charged 10$/h? (that's minimum wage at our place, just saying).
Result would be 200$: pretty unreasonable price for my skill level. And even though..
My guess is that ''said'' artist you speak of try to live off from it and takes wage from /hour worktime.
