As most of my Watchers will already know, i am on an Animation Course at Universtiy, which mainly focuses on 3D character design ans story telling.
We'll be using the 3D Design Program, Maya, which after playing with it a little on Wednesday, i found it was just like Second Life but more advanced.
I downloaded the PLE (Personal Learning Edition) of the latest release of the software, Version 8.5, which i got from here: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servle.....amp;id=7635018 if anyone is interested in downloading it.
In the picture, is the head of my firsona, Rusty, which i started yesterday. Annoyingly, PLE has this stupid watermark thing that comes up so that you cant sell your creations :/ kinda hard to work with at times cos it covers up edges of the shapes and other things >.<
I havnt figured out how to bend or morph shapes yet, if theres anyone here that can help me out thatd be awesome ^w^ im sure i could find a way to thank those who do :D

I've tried using the PLE version and found that it's useless for trying to do homework. That lame watermark and being stuck with one file type really puts a damper on trying to use programs legally and still get homework done.
Maya doesn't work the same way as second life does. Yes, you can conceivably build a character out of primitives like in second life, but it's not the way maya was designed to work and the results will show that.
Bending and morphing of shapes in maya is done through deformers which are used for animation and are not a modeling tool. Modeling is best done through manipulation of vertexes on polyginal surfaces.

As far as home work goes i'll use the machines in the computer labs they have in the uni, cos my Mac, though it can handle the PLE program, its a bit slow, the PCs they have are nice, fast and lag free. I'm, gonna use my Mac for personal projects and learning how to use the program more.
At the moment, with it being the first year of the course, we're only doing basic modeling, so my SL experience plays a key part in it, but like u say thats not what its meant for. In the second and third years it'll progress to making more complex modeling.
Tomorrow, we're making a spaceship from a cube @_@ i think its one of the basic tutorials from a "how to use Maya" book, thats gonna be interesting.
Thanks for your coment though :D the last part was very helpful ^w^ I'll try it out when i finish todays lectures :D expect to randomly receive a piece of gift art in some form or other some time soon X3
