I understand those who don't know their cars, but when the lettering on the hood is legible and they still guess so horribly wrong, or point blank call it something else just because it borrowed styling from European and Asian cars (Ford, which owns Mercury, pays, or used to pay, a lot of attention to foreign body styles.)
A 302 CI V8 in something this small reminds me of my '92 Cadillac Sedan De Ville, with it's 4.9liter 300 CI V8 and 310 horsepower in a body-frame the size of a 2005 Impala

Yeah, if it has the flat back glass its a 1979 Capri, based on the Fox chassis its the C2 version. I'm debating if the 5.0 decal is gennie as far as I recall the Capri came more with flat stickers then raised chrome decals. It also would likely have been sporting the Mustang style hood scoop. Wheels aren't stock of course as the offered sport wheel for 79/80 was the Michelin TRX wheel, the first incantation of a street sport tire sporting a 390 mm diameter rim (15.4 inch) and wide aspect ratio tires. The chassis was deemed to be a little flexy but still a decent performer for the time. I had a 79 RS with a heavily built 2.3 NA that was raced about every week, the engine torque ended up twisting the body, closing the drivers side door gap and expanding the passenger side one. The fox chassis shared parts with the Mustang/Fairmont/LTD II and the Lincoln Versailles.
