There are several base requirements for candidacy in fulfilling Kennel mercenary contracts. Qualification with recognized small arms is a major component of this. Graduating conditioning schools are one thing, but mastering an owned weapon to the degree where an expensive qualification test can be confidently passed is considered the bare minimum basis for official recognition as a mercenary.
The weapon used to pass over seventy percent of the service pistol qualifications for Kanin mercenaries is the famed side arm of the valor alliance from over thirty years ago (or one of it's many variants/imitations) . It has a fourteen round magazine, a high velocity cartridge necked down to thirty-seventh one hundredths of an inch, takes advantage of a massive existing industry, and is highly accurate within the effective range of sharp vision for most Kanin breeds.
It is such a popular pistol that a special program in the mercenary to bequeath the unclaimed combat .37's of combat casualties to under privileged youths aspiring for service internship. The Antheran view the weapon with a mixture of disgust and grudging respect. The sheer saturation of these weapons in Kanin culture as well as the former Valor states resulted in many bullet ridden Sturmacht carcasses.
The weapon calls for a practical two handed shooting posture. Lighter bodied shooters must take care to properly set their shoulders as the operation of the slide requires a firm hold to push off of to ensure the weapon chambers properly. The combat .37 is capable of rapid semi automatic fire and its lethality comes from how easy it is for a trained shooter to follow multiple follow up shots. Though uncommon, it is not unheard of for smaller mercenary companies to take to the field armed exclusively with combat .37's and a handful of support weapons.
The weapon features a distinctive safety feature, unless the firer is gripping the weapon to depress the safety plate in the back, the internal hammer is disengaged from the trigger, eliminating negligent discharge under all but the most heinous of circumstances.
