A picture of
durj's character Doc Riley for his birthday.
This one took me a while because I was working in it while I was sick.....It seems I don't work well when I'm not.

Wow..just wow.
It feels like this takes place on a really cloudy day just after a rather dreary rainstorm. There's a bit of gloominess to it (just a smidgen) but Doc isn't looking back at that now. Riley has decided that, damn it, he's going to enjoy the sunlight, since the sun has decided she feels like coming out, after all. Doesn't matter that the grass is wet and his butt and tail will be green, it's just too nice to let such a great day go to waste.
You really put yourself into your work, Slain. Even if I didn't know that you've had a rough time of it (and had been sick) It still feels like a little sunshine might finally be shining down on you for once.

Well things are certainly better that's for sure, my work has it mojo back having lost much of it's luster in the first half of the year....as well as my future status while hardly great isn't the the astounding lows it had been a few months prior (at one point I was even at risk of becoming homeless), so in light of that it's easier to be better spirits. I would also like to thank you, I love the insightfulness of your comments.
Woah, Slain! Just when I thought you were the god of the gods of backgounds already, you level up with this! The depth I mentioned in your previous post is even better applied here, I think. I love how you didn't play things safe and veered away from your mastered already schemes, this one having a cooler day feeling in contrast to your usual warm sunsets/indoor lightings. I have this impression that the composition works radially, which goes really well in emphasizing Doc. I hope you won't mind if I point out that the tree roots could use just a tiny bit of adjustment so they would look like they were buried deeper in soil. In any case, this is amazing work, I could totally imagine it as a scene for an anim. Stay brilliant!
I agree with the roots actually, which I thing I've pulled off better in other drawings......I maybe over simplified and rounded off the shape of them here to a negative effect......should be a little more careful with that next time. Otherwise I'm glad you so fond of this one.......it was a long time in the making so it pleases me it panned out.
I really love the mood and atmosphere of this. Just like with the bar scene picture, I feel like this is a real (Toony, yet real), fleshed out would where you could smell the grass and ozone (Such as how it smells before or after rain on a warm day) and feel the sunshine. I know this probably sounds crazy, but you're one of the few artists I've ever encountered whose work has ever made me associate specific smells or sensations such as warmth to individual pieces.
The high contrast in the shading looks great as well, and as always, I love the line art.

Just wow. This seriously is one of your best works by far. I love his pose and the way you do him (draw him a ref sheet, now!!! XDD)
I just love the lighting.. this very much reminds me of when I was at school, and I kinda went and sat under a tree during lunch break just to take in some fresh air and draw etc. It's a very familiar feeling.
I think you captured Doc very well. He seems happy but there's also something kinda deeper than that. Like he's holding back something sad as well. He is laid back and calm but there is just a mood to this.. like he sighing away his troubles. I love that feeling.
I love how you did the trees in the background and I like the cityscape though I don't feel it's needed. That's really my only crit for this piece, everything else is really nice and this is a piece that highlights your talents so well. :D I just love seeing stuff like this in my inbox by you.

Well the idea behind the cityscape is that I wanted the scene to have a scene of being a peaceful escape the the noise and congestion of civilization.....maybe it didn't come across as well as I'd intended. Either way I'm still glad you liked it.....and I'll try to keep delivering work of this caliber and hopefully better in the future.
