Found a burrow of baby bunnies. Unfortunately while I was mowing the field (2 foot tall grass) They scurried and got out of the way (except for one sadly > < I feel like a monster) but, I picked them up, and put them all back in the burrow.

It's not a myth, it's very much true. If a mother animal smells something strange on their babies that is threatening it will abandon their babies. He had no choice but to handle them to bring them back to their nest. There are occasions where they must be handled like this one, but it is not a myth, it is very true and should be taken very seriously cause it can result in the life of a baby animal.
Ah thank you very much for clearing that up cause I know when people touch baby hamsters for example the mother ends up killing them no matter if the mother loves ya or not. I know for one thing birds don't have that sense of smell so about them touching the babies is a myth I have handled some fallen baby birds in my life time which had to be placed back into their nesting area. Thankfully for that the mother raised them till they learned how to fly.
Well it can be iffy with birds. I handled a nest of birds out of curiosity when I was like 5ish.. my mom told me not to but I was too curious, and the mother ended up abandoning them, I think maybe it was because I was spending too much time around the nest and not so much the sense of smell. All I remember is being upset when they died.
